Tutorial: Jailbreak iPhone 4S and iPad 2 on Windows (iOS 5/iOS 5.0.1)
As many of you are probably already aware of, the promised and anticipated untethered jailbreak for Apple’s A5 devices was released just a few days ago and, though it currently was only available for Mac users, there’s also now two ways to jailbreak when on a Windows PC.
Dubbed Absinthe, the new software allows you to jailbreak your iPhone 4S and iPad 2 devices that are running on either iOS 5 or its successor, iOS 5.0.1. Previously, it was only available for Mac users, although there was a version without the graphical part for Windows, but the program is now easily downloadable for PCs.
The Chronic Dev team promised the Windows version, and they’ve quickly pulled through. You can download the program here, though you may be hauled down by GreenPoisOn’s servers, which are probably being rammed currently due to the popularity of the jailbreak.
One you download the program, you simply plugin your iOS device and hit the jailbreak button, though keep in mind that you’ll most likely want to backup prior. You should be faced with a “Restore in Progress” screen, which is normal. It’s essential that you don’t unplug your device. You should then see the Apple logo, your iPhone or iPad 2 should reboot, and you’ll be faced with a pristine Cydia icon. Enjoy!
If you’re adventurous type, there’s an alternative method to jailbreaking, which was the way to do it before The Chronic Dev team released the program yesterday. It can be slightly tedious but if playing with Command Prompt on Windows is your cup of tea, by all means see below:
Step 1 - Disable any VPNs setup as well as a passcode if your device has one.
Step 2 - Plugin your iOS device.
Step 3 - Download the latest version of the CLI that you’ll be using, from this link.
Step 5 - Search for cmd through the start menu and run it as an administrator.
Step 8- If you’ve entered the above correctly, your iPhone or iPad 2 will light up with a message confirming the installation of a profile. You have to click Install, disregard the next screen that brings up a password field and then hit next.
Step 9- Upon the installation of the profile, enter the following into cmd: cinject -j payloads
Step 10- Now enter this into cmd: cinject -w
I have jailbroken my iPhone 4S with the second of the two processes, which worked out flawlessly. I’m excited that the dev team have successfully executed the jailbreak, kudos to them. For the ease of access, here’s the direct link to download the Mac OS X version of Absinthe.
