Student Increases Phone's Battery Life By 12x By Removing Wires

Atif Shamim, a PhD student at Carleton University in Canada, has stumbled on what appears to be a breakthrough in the energy efficiency of mobile devices. He created a module that replaces all of the wires connecting a phone's electrical circuits and the antennae, making them communicate wirelessly. What's so fascinating about this is that it makes the device's efficiency 12 times over, drastically improving battery life.

Atif's paper on the subject won him an award at the European Wireless Technology Conference, and has filed for a patent in the U.S. and Canada on the technology.

We're not sure what the likelihood is of this tech making it into an iPhone someday, but we sure hope it does.

we put some antennas in yo' antenna so you can transmit data while you transmit data!

This is cool. I wish my phone had 12x more battery right now. That would be awsome. I am surprised the phone didn't get messed up at all. And that would be cool if they could do that to the iphone.

I feel for you

WTF? I thought methods of wireless power were incredibly inefficient. That wireless power that Intel was working on and Xbox 360 controller chargers all have rather lowly reviews due to the inefficiencies. I thought this meant that more power was wasted to simply transfer enough energy without direct conduction. Seriously WTF. Am I way off here?

Cancer anyone?

Wonder if this new advance will add to the prevailing opinion that cell phones give rise to brain tumors...

Seriously. Something is wrong here if he claims to increase efficiency by adding another wireless relay into the design. Should we see a clue in the name Sham-im?

I see this story has been picked up by a lot of new sites, but this is the only place where someone has said it sounds fishy.
