Santa Claus App Pulled After Twisted Christmas Song Fiasco
Remember that Christmas app who’s publishing company was paying people to download the app and write good reviews about it in iTunes? It was recently removed from the App Store, but not for the reason you might think. The publisher was able to get away with undermining the iTunes store rating system for a short time without incurring the wrath of Apple, but in the end the app ultimately had to face a comparable power– angry parents.
Not long after the app was initially released last month, the publishing company The Casual Game Network was caught hiring people via Amazon’s Mechanical Turk to purchase the app and give it a five star rating.
Somehow it managed to escape getting pulled by Apple for this, but a new disaster has gotten it removed. Last Friday’s episode of Santa Live 2008 featured Mr. Claus doing what he always does, but this time it was to the theme of the twisted Christmas classic, “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer”.
Most of us would probably think little of it, but parents who’s children were watching at the time took it a little more seriously. Apparently they didn’t like the idea of their children hearing about how their grandmother was killed by one of Santa’s reindeer. The onslaught of feedback from parents was enough to make him pull the app for good, sacrificing the $12,000 he invested in the 3D rendering process.
Those who downloaded the app can expect the remainder of the weekly episodes promised until Christmas.
