Carrier Settings Update 3.1 Available For AT&T Users [Update: Adds AT&T MicroCell Support]
Users with iPhones on AT&T’s network started getting notifications on Friday that a new carrier settings update is available for download. The update, which is from 2.9 to 3.1, doesn’t list exactly which settings are being updated, but may include changes to the default settings for the way it connects to the network, special dialing codes, and the default settings for Stocks, Maps, Weather, and other items. More information about carrier settings updates is available here.

Update: We weren’t really sure what the update changed, but TUAW says it adds support for AT&T’s upcoming 3G MicroCell service. The MicroCells will be kind of like a WiFi base station for your AT&T 3G cell phone, acting as a tiny cell tower inside your house that connects you to the network through an AT&T broadband DSL or cable connection. The devices would be especially useful for businesses or people (like myself) who reside in a dead zone on AT&T’s network or have poor coverage in certain indoor locations.
The new update was found to have added two images, both the dark one shown below and a lighter one, which are believed to be status icons of a 3G MicroCell connection that would be displayed on the iPhone’s status bar.
AT&T’s MicroCells are not yet available, but you can get more information about them here.
