Bill Nye Explains Oleophobic Screen Coating On iPhone 3GS

So we know the iPhone's screen is oleophobic, which we're pretty sure means it won't get all greasy-looking from the oil from your fingers and face (and potato chips). None other than science-man Bill Nye explains what exactly is going on in a guest piece for Gizmodo. Apparently it involves taking an organic compound and bonding it to the screen using... well, science.

So, does it actually help when eating potato chips? I've heard mixed results from friends but haven't yet seen an actual 3GS.

I ask partly as a joke and partly for real. My five year old plays Super Monkey Ball when we're out at restaurants and my screen is always gross & nasty when he is done because he manages to get grease all over it. I don't suppose this would help? (My solution is to just use a wet wipe all over the phone when he's done)

I've played with the 3GS and the screen does seem better against grease and sweat.

Definitely much better! And if it does get oily, one swipe (or two) and it's all gone. Loves it!
