AT&T Doesn’t Plan on Charging for FaceTime on Cellular
AT&T has revealed that it will not charge users a premium for using FaceTime over a cellular connection, but instead will require those who desire to do so to be on one of its new Mobile Share data plans.
iOS’ popular device-to-device video chatting feature was previously limited for use over a WiFi connection. The anticipated switch to allow calling from both a WiFi and cellular connection will become available once iOS 6 launches.
Last month AT&T’s CEO Randall Stephenson declined to discuss how the carrier would handle the newly-added feature simply stating that it was, “too early to talk about pricing.”
Here’s the statement from AT&T:
AT&T will offer FaceTime over Cellular as an added benefit of our new Mobile Share data plans, which were created to meet customers’ growing data needs at a great value. With Mobile Share, the more data you use, the more you save. FaceTime will continue to be available over Wi-Fi for all our customers.
AT&T’s new Mobile Share plans will be launching in four days on the 23rd and are essentially data plans catered for AT&T customers that plan on sharing a certain data allotment with members of their family. Although they don’t really shave any of the overall price off as compared to multiple regular data plans, the new Mobile Share options are optimal for those also searching for unlimited minutes and unlimited messaging. The plans are structured with two variables: the type/number of devices to be included in the plans as well as the amount of data.
