Apple, China Mobile Making Progress in iPhone 3G Negotiations
When in doubt, negotiate. According to recent reports, negotiating obstacles between Apple and wireless carrier China Mobile may be narrowing, despite informal talks having been stalled for months. Per China Mobile spokeswoman Rainie Lei, the significant obstacle of revenue sharing may have been resolved.
“Apple is no longer insisting on a revenue-sharing policy, so the biggest hurdle for China Mobile to bring in the iPhone has been cleared,” says Lei, “but there are practical issues still to be resolved.”
In recent negotiations with foreign markets, Apple seems to have abolished its revenue-sharing agreement with interested parties, instead opting for would-be carriers to subsidize the price of the upcoming handset. Remaining issues are likely to include distribution, adapting cellular frequencies, and pricing.
