Breaking: Downgrades From v1.1.1 Are Possible [Updated with guide] -    #1

The clever folks over at the Hackint0sh forums have figured out a way to revert the iPhone's software back from v1.1.1 which came out Thursday. After failing numerous times, Hackint0sh user Kmac1985 figured out the magic method for downgrading. The benefit of this is primarily to fix disabled phones of users who had unlocked them. For the honest folks out there, this also re-enables the use of 3rd party applications. So if the iTunes Store wasn't as sweet as you had hoped, you can now go back in time and enjoy Installer.app all over again.

To downgrade your iPhone to version 1.0.2, follow these instructions. Have the iPhone docked and plugged into your computer with iTunes open:

  1. Hold down the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds. The phone should shut down.
  2. When the phone shuts down, release the Sleep/Wake button but continue holding Home
  3. Wait until iTunes recognizes the iPhone. The screen will appear to be off, but iTunes will eventually recognize the iPhone. When it does, let go.
  4. A message will appear telling you to restore. Click OK
  5. Using your favorite browser, download the v1.0.2 software from this location. You may need to rename to .ipsw if it comes as a .zip
  6. Back in iTunes, hold Option on the Mac or Shift on the PC while clicking Restore. Navigate to the software you downloaded and select it.
  7. The phone will restore, but it will fail. This is normal.
  8. Your iPhone should show a yellow triangle. Run Nullriver's AppTapp. It should bring you back to the Activation step on the phone and show an error in the application. Disregard the error.
  9. Run AppTapp again and it should succeed.
  10. If not using an AT&T SIM, use INdependence to activate your iPhone. That's it!

We have not tried this yet, but there have been at least 50 successful downgrades reported thus far. If you have trouble with these instructions or if we missed something, let us know!

Updated at 8:50 Central: You may also follow the instructions posted by the iPhone Dev Team here.

AT&T service affected? -    #2
Seems to be indications in the hack forum that this trick might leave you with no cell service if you're on AT&T but looking to correct the mistake of getting the 1.1.1 update. Any confirmation either way on what happens to phones with active AT&T service?

success downgrading from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2 -    #3
Thanks so much to all who are helping defeat the wrong attitudes at Apple.
It's like the old Joni Mitchell song - you don't know what you've got till it's gone.
I missed Summerboard and SendSong and LightsOff and so many others, so now I will be making donations to all of the developers I can find!

re: capnken's question- My AT&T service seems to be working as expected. Well, maybe voice mail is hosed... not sure yet.

Worked like a charm! -    #5
Successfully downgraded from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2! Hallelujah!
Easy breezy. Second AppTap install worked. Didn't need to run INdependence. It activated all on it's own. iTunes immediately recognized it and asked me to restore to the last sync. All my settings are exactly as they were. Even prefs and settings from the 3rd party apps like Summerboard and Navizon that I'd had before the 1.1.1 update were restored!
All AT&T services including Edge and voicemail work perfectly.

Thanks to all the dev community. I donated and urge everyone to do the same. Keep them crankin!

I took the plunge and can confirm all AT&T services are working correctly; 3rd party apps are back, etc. I got an error at the end of the Apptapp process the first time and didn't get installer.app showing up, but I just re-ran it after restoring in iTunes and all is right with the world again.

Kmac1985 for President!

ringtones -    #8
Any word on whether or not this will allow us to add back the free custom ringtones we made prior to the firmware update?

Wow, this was a quick workaround. I hope after the break of 1.1.1 is made and Apple releases 2.2.2 or whatever, and Apple gives a warning that patience is exercised as the Developer team finds a workaround in a matter of days... It would certainly relieve one's stress, reduce their blood pressure and reduce the profanity on some of these message boards, okay?

attention all
this is what downgrading to 1.0.2. can do for you

After downgrading firmware to 1.0.2. you can:
Jailbreak/unshackle your phone
(This means iBrickr, and iFuntastic work perfectly )
add all 3rd party apps (via installer, apptapp installer)
add custom ringtones via the way you used prior to 1.1.1
Basically. . . you can do whatever you wanted to do prior to upgrading

HOWEVER
there is still no way to use any other SIM aside from original AT&T. . . however, the dev team is working on a way to get that back together and from what I can see are very hopeful that this can be done and soon.

hope everyone is happy now that we can go back and wait for them to continue breaking the 1.1.1

You're not supposed to unzip the files. Rename the .zip to .ipsw and restore from that single file.

If you don't have an AT&T account, you're SOL. Do you have AT&T or is it another carrier?

Help -    #16
I am trying to downgrade from the 1.1.1 to the 1.0.2 on step 6 it says " Hold option and click restore" Which I did, and I have downloaded the 1, 1_1 as it told me to. The instructions are to then "Navigate to the down load and "Select"" What am I suppose to select? When I navigate to it there are like 4 options and a folder that takes me into another bunch of stuff. Pleas help if you can...

Please help.
It seems that when I download the file it decompresses it automatically to a folder. Is it any other way to do it or I am doing something wrong? I just clicked on the link and after awhile it asked me if I want to download it and I said yes and made a folder on my desktop where I decided to save it. Pls let me know what I am doing wrong. Thanks a lot.

Excellent!! -    #19
Thank you for the post. My phone is restored and working great. I had to run installer more than 2 times - in fact - it kept repeating the error over and over until I launched iTunes and strangely it finally succeeded. I recommend this method to anyone who wants to return to having fun with their phone. Third party apps are FAR BETTER than giving Apple more money by using the wifi store.
