How to: Check Where Your iPhone 5 Is Right Now

If you were one of the hundreds of thousands of people who pre-ordered an iPhone 5 directly through Apple’s online store, then attempting to check the status of your handset results in an unnerving “preparing for shipment” message. By now, you’re probably wondering why your phone is still preparing to be shipped. After all, it does have to travel all the way from China in time for its launch this Friday.

Truth is, though, your iPhone 5 has most likely already left its origin city in China and is currently making its way towards you. How can you can sure? Thanks to a handy trick posted by the Houston Chronicle’s Dwight Silverman, you can tell whether your new, shiny iPhone 5 device has shipped yet.

Considering the mass number of iPhone 5 devices Apple has to distribute throughout the various countries included in this Friday’s launch, it’s only logical that the company would be shipping through both FedEx and UPS. This trick will only work with the latter, so if it doesn’t work for you, stay calm – it’s not like Apple has completely misplaced your phone, but rather that it will be sent using FedEx.

To find out, simply head over to the UPS website by clicking here. On the left side of the screen, find the tracking options titled “Track by Reference” and click on it.

Now you’ll be prompted to enter your reference number. This is essentially either the number associated with the iPhone or the number of your billing address. Choose your destination country and then enter your area zip code.

If your iPhone 5 is being shipped through UPS, then the status of your device should show up including the estimated delivery date as well as the current location.
