Wake The Neighbors With Your iPhone's Ringer

One of the most common complaints about the iPhone is how quiet the ringer is. Most, including myself, have blamed this on iPhone's tiny speakers. As it turns out, the culprit is the audio itself and not the speaker it plays on. Granted, tiny speakers aren't good for playing loud, low-frequency audio, but that's not the point. It's always a good idea to use loud, high-frequency audio as a ringtone. Where do you find such an amazing piece of audio? Amazingly enough, most of don't even realize that we have it living on our Macs this very moment.

I discovered this when I went looking for a ringtone that was a simple "ring". No marimbas, no crickets. Just a plain old ring. During my quest, I came across a message board that referred to GarageBand possessing just what I was looking for. After searching through the app, I came across exactly what I wanted - a simple "ring".

The sound, called "Cell Phone Ringing, comes courtesy of GarageBand's royalty-free audio loops. The file is located fairly deep within a myriad hierarchies at:

/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/iLife Sound Effects/Work - Home/Cell Phone Ringing.aif

The iPhone doesn't like raw AIF audio, so the next step is to convert that sound into something it does play. Both AACs and MP3s should work fine, but I like using AAC. iTunes is my application of choice for this task. Add the file to your library, right (or control) click the filel and select "Convert Selection to AAC". If you don't see this option, you need to select "AAC Encoder" from Preferences>Advanced>Importing. Once you have your AAC file, upload it to the /Library/Ringtones folder on your iPhone using iFuntastic (or another method).

Now, I hadn't set out to find a magically easy to hear ringtone, but that's exactly what this file turned out to be. You wouldn't believe how well you can hear it.

If you've been struggling to hear your iPhone ring, give this one a try. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

ringer

does anyone have one of those "high pitched" "high frequency ringtones" that supposidly 25 years and under are only supposed to hear?

you can use those and just convert to AAC (for those who are like me and never use iTunes)
or this site has some normal cell ringers
http://www.hoehne-design.com/ringtones/

oh and those ringers get insanely loud...you werent kidding about waking the neighbors

You can make that sort of tone using Audacity. Go to Generate>Tone and do something like 17000Hz. Play with that a bit and see what works best for you. When you're done, export it to WAV and convert to something like m4a

if i can find the cable to connect my razr to my computer i will post all those ringers and the ones off my wife's blackberry too

when i go to apple loops theres no apple folder just "user loops"???

i have a pack of loops that i got about a month ago, i'll upload them to rapidshare when i get a chance.

So how can I xfer some of these to my iPhone?

And us poor pc users??

I would love to have a louder ring tone

it is explained several times in the forum, in the cyberduck thread for one

We have a bunch of ringtones for the iPhone which might help you wake your neighbors.. and or even yourself.

Hearing the Ringer

I have found that the very same music ringtones I used on my Razr phone, are not loud enough on the iPhone. To my ear they sound half as loud. My solution was simply to bring them into an audio editor (Audacity, Amadeus, Sound Studio, etc), and up the decibels by 6-12, depending on the ringtone. I was able to listen to it within the program to make sure I wasn't at the distortion point.

Now I can hear my ring tones without a problem on the iPhone.

(Also in general I make my ringtone songs with the following recipe:
Mixdown to mono
resample at 22khz (taking it down from 44)
encode as mp3 at 32 - 64 kpbs. Really it's hard to hear a difference on the puny speaker of a phone. This recipe usually produces a 25 second ring tone song that takes up only 90-130K.

I am so happy to have found this link, since I miss every other call....and the vibrate feature doesn't exactly make me tingle, either.

But....

You say: "Once you have your AAC file, upload it to the /Library/Ringtones folder on your iPhone using iFuntastic (or another method)."

Okay, did everything and downloaded iFuntastic....but I really don't want to go through Hitting "Restore" when it seems like there's another way to just get the ringtones on the phone. Is there?

It would be so nice to be able to answer the phone, it works so well otherwise.

iTunes doesn't officially support non-purchased ringtones. You'll have to use something like iToner

Search for what I believe is called a Mosquito ringtone. I am 33 and I could barely hear it. My girlfriend is 26 and she found it real annoying to the point she was shouting to me to turn it off. She used to teach in school and her kids were using it and were surprised she could hear it....

Cell Phone Ringing

Ok. I have it as both mp3 and aac but I do not have a MAC. Is there a simple way to use this great ringtone without hacking the iPhone? Thanks...

There sure is! Ambrosia has a great product called iToner. You've probably heard about it. http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/itoner/

It's really awesome. No hacks, really simple and works with iPhone v1.1.1

I have the "Cell Phone Ringing" file but how do I upload to the iphone without a hacking program?

Except it only runs on MAC... Any other ideas?

this works

This works so far. Last update messed with it but it works again. Tomorrow could be another story.

Any Ideas

I have searched countless hours trying to find a way to use the "Cell Phone Ringing" ringtone found on Macs without hacking my iPhone (hacking is not a option). So far, no luck. I have downloaded and tried multiple conversions. I run XP Pro SP1 and my iPhone has the latest updates. Thanks.

m4a or m4r

Loud Cell Ring.m4a
That is the way mine was encoded when I sent it to my phone WITH A MAC and iFuntastic. Later, after the great brick scare I loaded the same file with iToner.
The m4 is important. It might need an m4a or m4r depending on which version of software is on your iPhone. Just rename it and load it again if one does not work.
Another format that works is .aif.
All of this is not what you want to hear. I just read your post saying you had a PeeCee. MakeiPhoneRingtone is another free drag and drop ring tone program, but it too, is for Mac. So go out there and find something for that PeeCee. Really! There must be more out there for your platform than there is for mine.

Not really loud enough

It is certanly a normal ringtone, but still not loud enough at all!
Does anyone knows how to get a loud enogh ringtone, for god's sake!
thanks

it works

all i did was download the .zip file extract the audio file

reaname it to m4r

right click - select open with - itunes

it opens in itunes in ringtone folder and play

sync iphone and ringtone works fine

the sound level is comparable to that of all my other ringtones

all of this done in windows - itunes 7.6 - iphone firmware 1.1.3

I just got my iPhone (Unlocked) running 1.14 I am half deaf so the loud ringtone is a necessity. I found the Cell Ringtone here /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/iLife Sound Effects/Work - Home/Cell Phone Ringing.aif (though the extension is .caf on my machine) but I can't seem to bring into iTunes. I tried changing the extension to .aif but that doesn't work either. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Copy that file to Desktop. From there, open it in iTunes. (command+click>Open With) After its in iTunes, convert it to AAC, drag it back onto the Desktop, and rename it from example.m4a to example.m4r

Now it can be double clicked and itunes will add it into the Ringotnes library.

I have the newest version of itunes. and 1.1.4 firmware. i just download ringtones. convert to aac. get to the aac file in windows and change the extension to .m4a to .m4r and it works fine for me. just reupload the changed extension ringtones and they automatically go to ringtones. to change the extension in windowns, make sure you go to the control panel and open up file options and you make sure that you uncheck "hide file extentions" so you are changing the extention, not just covering it.

Just download this file, extract and open it with itunes. It will automaticaly go to the ringtones section in itunes, no just drag it into your iphone...
