SingTel, the official iPhone carrier in Singapore, Australia, and the Philippines and India, has announced that they have sold 170,000 iPhones since they launched the handset in early July and late August in their respective countries. Not all the news is good, however. They're claiming now that the heavy subsidies they're providing are really starting to dig into their profits.
SingTel started selling the iPhone 3G in Singapore at midnight local time on Thursday, but at launch it will be missing several of the features currently available in other countries. Users with SingTel will not have access to visual voicemail, nor the music and videos sold by Apple through the iTunes Store.
Confirming at least part of a statement from a May press release, SingTel has announced that they are the official iPhone carrier for Singapore. iPhone 3Gs will begin shipping there on August 22nd. They have yet to announce pricing details for the phones or plans. They have posted some tips for migrating contacts from another device to the iPhone 3G, as well as a way to reserve an iPhone.
