Magellan Press, Inc., released a flurry of interesting and versatile applications for the iPhone, two of which are actually used to turn your iPhone into a tuning device for guitar.
The OmniTuner application allows full tuning functionality using iPhone’s microphone, and it ends up working very well. There are four main areas of tuning, all of which containing the primary pitch signifier. There is the Standard section, which simply tells you the precise note, a Fretboard which actually allows you to check according to typical tuning for standard guitar tuning, multiple alternate tunings, and even other instruments such as a banjo, violin, and ukelele.
This application also includes a Clef section, which merely shows you the full note range as seen on sheet music and lays the notes out while you play. A Frequency function is included as well, showing the wavelengths vibrate as noise is produced.
The only real downside is that the precision can be a little touchy, but I’ve noticed that it gets very close, and tuning with harmonics immediately afterward helps get the tuning perfect. This is a great buy, and I know that I’m going to be using this more often than my normal tuner (mainly because I lost the old one).
