I always use the Anti-Glare screen protector that is sold at the Apple Stores. I personally think they are the best because it is $15 for 2 screen protectors. With the screen protector on, you dont even know that it is there because it sits flush with the screen. Also, there are barely any smudges or fingerprints that show up while the protector is on.
While installing this protector, make sure to wipe iphone screen completely off. Also, the pack of protectors comes with a pre-installation film to remove hair or lint or dirt. If you end up with a bubble or a piece of hair underneath the protector you can wrap a piece of scotch tape around your finger in apply to a corner and pull up to remove the protector, and then just reapply the protector til it is on the way you want.
I had to remove mine on my 3gs about 5 times during installation and never noticed anything go wrong with the oleophobic screen. My screen looks like there is no protector on it at all and is protected.
One last thing, the feel of the screen with the protector installed is way way way better than without. What I mean is that when sliding fingers across the screen, it is very smooth and does not stick or anything or leave prints.
Mythbusters would be the obvious choice of people to test this myth.
