Jeff, great ideas for international travel! I was in Italy last summer and I didn't bring my iPhone, but I should have. Even with spotty coverage, being able to send and receive texts would have made it worth it. Italy is a very difficult place, when talking about conveniences. My wife has friends in family around Italy and getting in touch with them was always difficult.
