Tethering Activation 'Hack' Found Once Again For iPhone 3.0 [Updated]

Clever folks with clever tricks have once again found a way to enable tethering on iPhone 3.0. The workaround allows AT&T subscribers (among others) to enable tethering without hacking or paying a fee. It works by tweaking the carrier settings with an iPhone configuration profile. After installing the profile, tethering is automagically enabled! Rumor has it that you can enable MMS in the same manner, although the file currently available doesn't seem to enable it. We've heard that it might disable Visual Voicemail, although we haven't tried it yet.

The easiest way to install the tweaked profile is to grab it from http://www.benm.at/help/ on your iPhone. After you install, tethering should be enabled. If anything goes wrong, go to Settings>General>Profiles and remove the profile. Everything should go back to normal. The site also contains profiles for tons of other carriers, mostly in Europe.

Once we've tested the workaround, we'll let you know. If it requires some more tweaking, we may even post a version ourselves! Stay tuned...

Update: We've tried it and it does disable Visual Voicemail if you're on AT&T. However after a bit of tweaking to the config file, we managed to get VVM and tethering to work. Click this link on your iPhone if you're on AT&T and let us know how it works!

It works!

Well, the tethering works, but the phone gets hot to the touch really fast. I'm kind of scared to use it for more than a few minutes at a time! As far as the MMS goes, it still isn't working on AT&T yet. Well hopefully soon!

Tethering works, MMS does not :-(

How do I activate it?

I installed it but I can't figure out how to start the tether

Help..please!?

It worked for me too!!...that is until i deleted the network profile in my preferences =(
Can you please pm me /email me a screenshot of how you set it up on the mac?

Thanks!
Lq

What're you trying to set up on your mac? Everything is done via the iPhone ... accept for syncing it via Bluetooth. The USB tethering happens by itself. It should show up in the list of available networks. :3

Works great!

Just tried it and it works pretty seamlessly.

Working amazingly for me!

Here are my screenshots. Set-up is seamless!

im stupid i was skipping the bluetooth sync, thanks for the help =)

Also, could this be the iPhone exploit that everyone's talking about?

hmm

is it just me or is the website in a different language? I just cant seem to find the download link. must be blind! all help appreciated!

thanks

AT&T Carrier Version

Hey all, after installing the ATT_US.ipcc what is the version of AT&T CARRIER that is shown on the ABOUT section of the General Settings? I used to have 4.0 and now I have 5.0.

Anyone that can check? Thanks!

to activate MMS call AT&T and ask them to override the setting or whatever. I called and they said to call back after I installed 3.0 and they will gladly do it.

Visual voicemail still does not work with this updated settings file

travel to the website in red on you iphone to save you time its help.benm.at

I can only get visual voicemail to work if I delete all installed profiles. Reinstalled iphonealley profile and tethering works but visual voicemail is again disabled until I once again delete the profile. I guess I can install the profile when I want to tether and then delete it when finished.

Sorry but this might be stupid question. How does AT&T not know that you are tethering with the hack and charge you tethering fees?

Charges?

It works great!

But....do you think that ATT will know and apply some sort of strange per minute or per MB charge here?

Now if only we can get MMS to work!

Thanks for posting the Visual Voice Mail fix too!

After deleting both profiles I still have no VVM back... even after re-boot and hard reset. I even restored my iPhone...no VVM still!

Help?

I've Tried it, and It works with Digital voicemail in tact and all. I luv you guys

iPhone 2G...

It might be useful to point out in these articles that tethering only works with 3G iPhones and not earlier EDGE models.

so what do we need to do to get MMS to work?

VVM

I would try contacting AT&T's customer support and check that they are not having issues in your area with Visual Voicemail. I know in my area, for the last few days, I've been receiving VVM several hours after the person has left the message.

Which is very possible since WHENEVER APPLE CHANGES SOMETHING they seem to LOOSE ALL THE BARS, AND THE SERVICES, AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN... Jeez! I can just imagine what it is going to be in 2 days when people hit ON on their new iphones! AT&[shi]T will probably collapse (as usual) and then will blame Apple (as usual too)

That website has fixed the visual voicemail bug when adding tethering and has added MMS for At&t but how do you add the profile to your iphone?

if you call AT&T and ask them to turn it on for your they will they're helping me activate it right now

tethering to ipod touch

Has anyone tried sharing the connection with an ipod touch? Just wondering, thanks. Could be a future "hack".

Please post if you get this working. I called AT&T about our FamilyTalk messaging plan and the lady said that there are no blocks on our account for MMS whatsoever. Yet, I cannot get it to send, even when I input the settings for MMS in the Cellular Data options. I'm very curious to know what you had to do if you get it up and running. Thanks very much.

Only works with 3.0 GM

I had this hack on my 3.0 GM release and it worked great, except for MMS but once i updated to the REAL 3.0 it dont work.

I understand how to do the APN profile but how do I get the screen option to switch on tethering as above??? It is not an option in network settings for me.

Thanks,

Thanks,
all i did was restart my phone and like magic it is in the network setting

are you in the USA on our beloved AT&T aka network from the dark ages?

I installed the update and everything works just fine Tethering an VVM, but I still dont have any MMS options anywhere on my phone, I guess it is what it is.

Enabling MMS?

I got tethering to work, but don't have settings for MMS anywhere. Anything I am missing? I'm in the US and on AT&T.

can you take me through the steps? did you have a setting for tethering on the iPhone already?

I installed the updated mobile config file. Tethering and VVM are all fine. When I go to Messaging, there is no "camera button" like there should be. I also checked settings>messaging and there's no option to enable MMS.

So you have a toggle on/off tethering interface as In the above image?

Yep. That part works fine. It's just the MMS for some reason. I'm using the 3.0 GM.

thanks. The option to select doesn't come for me.

I tried with GM and final release (US based on AT&T). Feel like I'm back in the days of 2g with Pwnage and T-mobile and bootloader files etc etc.

I thought I was out of the woods on these things with AT&T - "the network with the most dropped calls..."

BlueTooth

I am able to tether via USB, but I can't seem to get my laptop or my Iphone to see each other.

Any ideas as to what I could be doing wrong?

thanks!!!

I am up and running with visual voicemail and tethering

just install the file and look for the option - it's pretty quick!

posting this from my newly tethered AT&T phone...

I cannot get the bluetooth working but I am ok with that as I am sure it would drain the battery fast!

I wonder if the work around would work on the 3gs?

thanks for the tip!

i downloaded the profile and tethering works great with my laptop! it is good to know that for now i have a backup in case my home connection goes out. i wonder how long this will last...thank you!

How can you get VVM back without SSH or hacking your phone or whatever? I prefer tethering over VVM, but I'd like to know how to go back if I ever need to.

I followed the link from the "update" section and both are still working

I wasn't thinking. Even after the update, I clicked the 1st link. VVM doesn't work for me. Is there any way to activate it again?

Maybe try again with the 2nd link. That's what I did.

I did...3 times. XDDD Didn't work.

But it worked for you?

Yeah. Maybe restore.

I just did my wifes with the 2nd link and worked great. Sorry about your issues. Blame the network with the most dropped calls. The new att
