Song Recognition For Your iPhone

in

There has been talk of audio recognition for some time now, but I hardly expected it to happen when it did, and from where. None other than Erica Sadun, TUAW writer and iPhone hacker extraordinaire, with a little help from GeeZuzz, has created Listen, an application that can tell you what you're listening to.

I didn't believe it when I first heard about the concept some time ago, and frankly it's still pretty unbelievable, true though it may be. Sadun has created an application that picks up music playing in the area over the microphone and can then identify it, displaying the song name, artist, and album.

It does this by taking a 5-second sample of the song and compares it to a database located on a server.

The application is still very much in beta, but it has the potential to be extremely useful. You can download Listen from Erica Sadun's web site.

I saw this yesterday and thought it would only recoginize a couple songs, but I was very impressed. Even though it has a interface that isn't too pretty "yet", it works with basically every song i tried. Sometimes I had to try the same song a couple times, but it would normally work eventually. I did this on Wifi, so i don't know how well it works on edge yet

It got "Epiphany" from the original cast recording of Sweeney Todd. Not Bad.

Great app

I tried this app last night, amazing how well it works considering it is still very much bata.
