Samsung Boasts 64Gb Flash Chips

Electronics giant Samsung showed off a 64Gb flash chip, double what has been announced by rival companies. While it will likely not be implemented into the iPhone for quite some time, it is a giant step forward in flash technology. The chip could be implemented into products by itself or in sets of two making a total of 128Gb. Using far less power than a hard drive and much less fragile, they are the preferred option in most newer products. A single 64Gb chip is, according to Samsung, capable of holding 18,000 songs or 80 DVDs.
The 64 gigabit (Gb) chips could be used to make 128Gb memory cards, commonly used in MP3 players, capable of holding the equivalent of 80 DVDs.
The product will be released in 2009, and rival company Toshiba has already stated they have began research on a competing chip. While it will be quite some time before the iPhone (Or iPods) adopts this capacity, current flash prices will most likely drop.
Samsung is currently one of Apple's largest NAND flash suppliers and has its chips in current Apple products such as the iPhone, iPod touch, iPod Nano, and iPod Shuffle.
