Quick Guide to Restoring iPhone/iPod Touch Sync in iTunes Posted

in

As nifty as the iPhone and iPod touch are, hiccups can occur. For cases where the device is syncing to iTunes, then either drops out or stops, the mighty Jeff Gamet has posted this quick how-to in order to get things humming along again:

-Connect your iPhone or iPod touch to your Mac.
-After the sync process fails, launch iSync. You can find it in your Applications folder.
-Select iSync > Preferences.

-iSync is the key to restoring the sync process.
-Click the Reset Sync History button.
-iSync will display a dialog explaining what happens when you reset the sync history. Go ahead and click the second Reset Sync History button.
-Quit iSync.

Keep in mind that once the sync history has been reset, the first post-reset sync may take a bit longer than expected depending on the amount of data being transferred.

It doesn't work

Here's the latest from Apple's discussion forums:

I have a friend at Apple who was able to get me connected with an iPhone engineer. They are aware of the issue. In the meantime (no timeline was given for a fix), I was instructed on how to remove the backup app from the iPhone syncing process so that I could at least hit the sync button as normal.

Here it is and I must reiterate that if you do this, your iPhone will NOT be getting backed up when you do a sync (which if you have the problem above, it's not getting backed up anyway!):
----
The only way around this is to disable backups. You can force this by
moving the backup agent from its location at
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Resources/
AppleMobileDeviceHelper.app/Contents/Resources/AppleMobileBackup

You should then be able to sync with your iPhone again, but
unfortunately it won't get backed up.
