PayAsYouGo Data Plans Will Stop Working With OS 3.0
If you have a prepaid iPhone plan and haven’t updated to iPhone OS 3.0 yet, you might want to think twice. Word has it that the software update will cause data service for PayAsYouGo GoPhone customers to stop working. PickYourPlan GoPhone customers should be OK after the update.
PayAsYouGo user Daniel Burkholder, as well as many others, received a distressing text message, informing him that iPhone OS 3.0 might disrupt his data plan.
Representative Brad Mays, who TUAW’s Erica Sadun spoke with at length on the phone, explained that PAYG (PayAsYouGo) customers are not using the official “unlimited” iPhone Data Plan, which he says “is necessary to make the 3.0 software work properly with their device”. PickYourPlan members, however, do have the official unlimited data plan, which will work just fine.
It seems this isn’t just for people on AT&T’s network, either. Reports of similar text messages being sent out to users on O2′s network have also surfaced asking users to use official iPhone data plans.
In short, if you’re not using the unlimited data plan, you’re going to need to sign up for one if you want to have data with iPhone OS 3.0.
