Original iPhones Still Selling Well On eBay

in

Although Apple has announced the iPhone 3G at the fantastic price of $200, first generation iPhones are still selling strong on eBay. Unlocked 8GB iPhones are going for about $350 on average, and 16GB phones for even higher. Why? A couple reasons come to mind. The first and most obvious is that the iPhone's data plan is cheaper than the 3G's. $10 a month adds up over two years, especially when you add text messages on top of it. Even more compelling is the unlocking. It may take some time before we see an unlock method for the 3G. Even then, it'll be difficult to acquire one with AT&T's in-store activation policy. Let's also not forget that first-gen iPhones are no longer in production.

A few examples of this phenomenon: 8GB sold for $370, another for $400, and a 16GB that went for a whopping $570.

So what should you do if you're still hanging onto your first generation iPhone with plans of buying the 3G? Our advice is to sell it as fast as you can. The price on these babies will only go down the closer we get to July 11th. Therefore, the key to making enough to fund a brand new iPhone is to go without a phone for a month.

And when you sell that iPhone, make sure it's unlocked. It's super easy and adds tons of value to your phone. Hack that phone has guides for unlocking the iPhone on both Windows and the Mac.

So will you be selling your iPhone now that you've seen the glory that is the iPhone 3G or sicking with your trusty first gen?

Thanks, MICHAELSD!

Iphone 1st gen still got value

Not to mention that the iphone 3G will not work on t-mobiles 3G network. T-mobile 3G is on band 4 ( 1710 -1755 MHz uplink and 2110 to 2155 MHz downlink) and ATT is on band 2 (1850 to 1910 MHz up and 1930 to 1990 down) and 5 (824 to 849 up and 869 to 894 down). So the only added feature for the 3G iphone on t-mobile is GPS.

I sold my 8GB 1st gen iphone on ebay for 499.95 just 2 weeks ago, unlocked and added tons of apps plus int support and keyboards. Sold to europe. then baught a crackberry for $30, and have been using that for 2 weeks, now i have another month until i get the 3G, wich basically is already paid for annd still am able to profit a little over 100, after ebay fees, paypal fees, buting the crackberry and getting a new 3g for $ with tax. Not too shabby

Yeah, that's a friggin great deal. Good job, sir.

Those with contracted iphones get the 3G Free!

I think you mean $199 for 8g (and $299 for 16g). Basically, if you are a current iPhone owner, then you will be eligible to buy the iPhone 3G at the subsidized price.

I still love my orginal iphone

I will be keeping my original iPhone. Why? I have a nice GPS receiver in my car already, and edge data is fast enough for what I do. Of course, at some point, I will upgrade, but it will almost certainly be at the end of my 2 year contract, which still has 13 months left on it.

I had the original iPhone 8GB and just bought a 3G 16GB at the Apple Store today. They charged me $299 for the 16 GB 3G ($499 minus $200 rebate....nothing to mail in....they subtracted it in the store), BUT.....ATT is going to charge me an $18 "Upgrade Fee" in addition.

The upgrade fee is standard and so is the $299 price on the 16GB iPhone 3G
