New iPhone Has 600 MHz Processor, Twice As Much Ram

Aside from saying that things would be an average of up to twice as fast in general, Phil Schiller didn't offer any specifications as far as what in the hardware had changed in the iPhone 3G S that made it faster. Now T-Mobile.nl has posted technical specs for the device, revealing a 600 MHz processor and 256MB of RAM.

That's a pretty decent increase compared to the current iPhone 3G's 412 MHz chip, and is even faster than the iPod touch's 532 MHz chip. It's 256MB of RAM is also twice as much as the iPhone 3G, which had just 128 MB. It's interesting that Apple didn't go into these details at WWDC, even for the developers, who would benefit from the information.

It is also believed to have the new PowerVR SGX graphics processing unit, which has support for OpenGL ES 2.0, though it hasn't yet been confirmed.

Anadtech claims to have a breakdown of the iPhone's processor and GPU from sources, for those of you interested in technical details. One point was particularly interesting:

Although unannounced, the iPhone 3GS uses (again) a Samsung SoC but this time instead of the ARM11 + MBX-Lite combo it's got a Cortex A8 and PowerVR SGX; just like the Pre.
