Layar, Multi-Purpose Augmented Reality App Hits App Store

Layar [App Store, Free], the highly anticipated augmented reality application for the iPhone 3GS, was recently released in the App Store. The Layar browser lets you view things like “houses for sale, popular bars and shops, touristic information of the area, play a live game, etcetera,” presented in a layer over live video taken through the camera in real time.

To use the app, you select a “layer” from the featured or popular section to be placed overtop of the video feed and hold your iPhone vertically in front of you so the camera faces the horizon. You’ll be presented with the information from that layer as points around you as though they existed in the real world. It also shows informations about the locations in the view of the camera in a spot at the bottom of the screen. Filters can be adjusted by tapping the button in the right hand corner that change what is shown. Clicking the arrow near the bottom right corner of the camera view shows you the ways you can interact with the selected point of interest.
