iPhone Updated to v1.1.1, Say Goodbye to 3rd Party Applications [Updated x2 Did it work for you?]

in

This afternoon, Apple released iPhone update v1.1.1. The update carries with it an ominous warning. "If you have modified your iPhone's Software, applying this software update may result in your iPhone becoming permanantly inoperable." As quite a few had feared, Apple has completely disabled the ability to install 3rd party applications. Among other things, new in this update is the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store which allows over-the-air downloads of tracks from the iTunes Store.

iPhones which previously had 3rd party applications installed do not seem to be bricked. Using this update on unlocked iPhones will result in an "Incorrect SIM" message.

Alongside the iTunes Wi-Fi store, Apple has also included a few features only found on the iPod Touch. The first seems to be the addition of TV out via the dock port. Apple has also added the ability to bring up iPod controls from within any application, simply by double clicking the home button. They've also added closed-captioning for video and an option to disable EDGE.

Updates Included (noted by MacRumors):

  • iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store

  • Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
  • Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites or music controls
  • Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
  • Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
  • Stocks and cities in Stocks and Weather can be re-ordered
  • Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
  • Support for TV Out
  • Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
  • New Passcode lock time intervals
  • Adjustable alert volume

In anticipation of the European release, Apple has added extra dictionaries to the iPhone. In the past, users typing in a different language had to fight with the keyboard which was based on English words. With the addition, users speaking other languages will be able to accurately type using the iPhone's predictive keyboard.

The update is available via iTunes and weighs in at 152.3MB. As with all software updates, if you've hacked your iPhone or installed 3rd party applications, you will need to do a full restore, so sync first! Unlocked iPhones are re-locked during the update. If you rely on 3rd party applications or a SIM unlock, do not update your iPhone until a workaround has been found.

This story will be updated as details come in.

Updated at 4:20PM: iPhones unlocked with anySIM or iPhone SIM Free will put your iPhone in a permanent unactivated state. Do not update your iPhone if you've used any of these

Updated at 5:25PM: We've been getting reports that unlocked iPhones are becoming bricked. After updating, tell us how it went and if your iPhone was unlocked and/or if you had 3rd party applications installed.

How's your iPhone after the update?

3rd party

just installed the new firmware 1.1.1 and all the 3rd party apps are gone. Hopefully Installer will come with a new version soon. You are great guys. btw is it anyway to reinstall the all version 1.0.2 back to my phone?

Anyone Brick Their Phone?

Anyone accidentally Brick their phone yet? Guess we will have to wait to mod again, Thanks iFuntastic!

Well it appears that 1.1.1 has also patched the jailbreak flaw as well.. ;( Also, this update _will_ in fact brick your iPhone if it has been unlocked!!!

Not sure if this still works or not... but worth a try.

On a Mac hold down the option button while clicking “Restore,” on a Windows sytem hold down “Shift” while clicking “Restore.” This will bring up a window to select the firmware file you would like to use. (On a Mac, it’s located in ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates). The old firmware file is named iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw

i wanted to add itunes to my phone but doesnt seem worth losing the apps

No International Keyboard

The International Keyboard, which UK's iPhone and iPod touch have, has not been included in this update. Bummer.

it is not working.

an unmentioned addition

there is also new text message sounds, which was note noted by apple before the update, or anywhere else ive seen thus far. there are five new sounds: chime, glass, horn, bell, electronic.

old fiemware

It doesn't work and don't try. The phone blocked and I had to restore it to its original settings.

using itunes 7.4.1 (dont know if it makes a difference). I restored my iphone. Lost all my ifuntastic stuff, and gained a store Used ifuntastic 3.5.5 to unshackle, picked the 1.0.2 software as what I had....and while trying to use apptapp the iphone disconnected itself. Had to try a few times to get it to restore, almost pooped my pants cause I thought I'd bricked it.

so ifuntastic doesnt work either. I also didnt know the latest version used apptapp which I found out afterwards was already broken.

No way am I updating. The updates new offerings arent anywhere near worth the trade of the great 3rd party apps.

im waiting very paciently for a workaround hopefully well have one soon

i just installed appinstaller on my iphone with the new update..i got the patch from an anonymous employee from apple...ill soon upload it via bittorrent. the phone works fine. just be sure you dont have the new itunes update. apperently the new update has some files that the old 7.1 doesnt have...ringtones are still there.. i dont know if it works with unlocked iphones.

losing apps vs itunes store?

I have 2 iphones and i did 1 with the upgrade and i have to say it is not worth losing all the 3rd party software. you can only use the itunes store with the wifi so you have to be at home or somewhere with a wifi. that sucks!! i would of thought you could use the store with the phone like the internet but its not. NOT WORTH THE UPDATE.

Hi !!

I'm going to NY tomorrow, and I was planning on buying an iPhone, which I need to unlock.

I don't care about the new features in 1.1, so my question is:

If I buy an iPhone right when I get out of the plane, is it possible that it's already on 1.1 (very unlikely buy tomorrow considering the stocks).
So, assuming it is not on 1.1, can I still install 1.0.2 and unlock it ?

Thanks for your help !!

i dont think you can unlock (yet) with the new 1.1.1, but if it's the old version, use one of the unlocker softwares and then you should be able to, but you can't update.

I don't understand why anyone who is saavy enough to be reading this forum would try to upgrade any phone before the Dev Team has a few days to bang on the new update?

Sigh.

SummerBoard & Ants where are you?

Please bring AppTapp back to Firmware 1.1.1
iPhone is boring without these apps...
Thanks

How to restore your iPhone without using firmware 1.1.1

If you have unlocked — for use on a carrier other than AT&T — your iPhone and want to restore it (because of troubleshooting issues or other reasons) while avoiding firmware/software update 1.1.1, which may cause your iPhone to become non-functional, use this method to restore using iPhone firmware 1.0.2 instead:

On a Mac hold down the option button while clicking “Restore,” on a Windows sytem hold down “Shift” while clicking “Restore.” This will bring up a window to select the firmware file you would like to use. (On a Mac, it’s located in ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates). The old firmware file is named iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw

I still have my TurboSIM from votech which I used prior to the software unlock. Anyone know if the TSIM will work with 1.1.1, until they sort out a software fix for the new firmware? I'm sure there's alot of people out their with TSIMs. Still won't have 3rd party app support but atleast maybe it can be used as a phone until the boys and girls around the world sort the 3rd party issue as well!

video out?

this post has a little discrepancy... It says the video out is for iPod touch only then goes off to say its foe the iPhone too... Did anyone get this sorted out? Please tell me it works on the phone... Also, which A/V cord are they talking about? Mine doesn't fit!

what effects does this have on people who simply "unlocked" their phone via iFuntastic?

i have only used a few apps via iFuntastic (as well as the customization/ringtones...). will an iTunes upgrade brick a phone that has simply been opened up via iFuntastic, or does the bricking involve things to do with opening it up to other networks?

i am not worried to much. an easy workaround is simply to not upgrade itunes until a workaround is found.

i am more and more astounded at apple's approach to locking out people from their own phones. a few years ago, apple was begging for people to develop for OS X, promising us an alternative to the microsoft attitude, and the community (both paid-for software and open-source) responded, and this is what happened.

next month i plan on spending about 2k on a new laptop. i was hoping to get a new macbook pro to go with my powermac, but i am seriously reconsidering. i dont know if i want to support the company anymore, which is sad, because their innovation is unmatched (but becoming overshadowed by corporate greed and beaurocracy).

iphone updated

I updated 2 iphones last night, one was never unlocked buy used ifuntastic to open it up install 3rd party apps, I simply connected the phone to update..
EVERYTHING WENT WELL, THE IS FINE.
No, as for the second phone I had unlocked it at one point using anysim, and also had installer and all other 3rd apps installed so he night before the update, I restored it like 5 times, I though that would save me for the new 1.1.1 update.
well docked it, started teh update
everything looked good until, it started up and, the phone said "incorrect sim card"
I called AT&T they told me did you install anything, that was not from apple. I said not me..they said try another sim I did, no success..fuck Im pissed the phone is "bricked" I have no phone.
I have an appointment with apple today..Ill see what happens ill update ya.
Fucking Devteam

I can't tell you how disappointed I am with Apple. This is another PR nightmare that is just beginning to brew.

okay here

I was just runnign the Installer.app stuff, did a restore and update, back to stock.....for a little while anyway....

No troubles here

Do I own my iPhone or Apple?

It is ridiculous that Apple decides what application I install on my iPhone, I have no use for the iTunes store as I use my iPhone for business purposes... I'd rather remove this and have my previous applications back and regain use my favorite theme.

All this would classify as a typical Microsoft move and makes me think twice when Apple springs to mind. This Nazi type practice will only invite programmers to create viruses and other nastiness.

Who is Apple to remove my applications without even asking me? It would be like having your car serviced at the dealership and they rip out your custom stereo equipment.

Class action anyone?

I am even more astounded, that if you are Apple rumor site addicted, then you have no excuse, none whatsoever, as to your situation. If you follow the rumor sites to any degree, you would have known that Apple & SJ informed you that it was an exclusive service, a la phone and rate plan, with at&t and that for now, the iPhone was a closed system, no SDK to outside software, in order to maintain security and operation feasibility. Now that may be a BS argument on Apple's part but they did mention it.

Now there may be a law issued by the government that says it is legal for customers to unlock a locked phone. But I don't believe that the "unlock" law says that the phone manufacturer of the locked phone has an obligation to make sure every firmware software update they release or every new phone with new OS that comes out has to be compatible and work with whatever hack software you used to make the phone unlock or any third party software you installed to be insured of it's functionality, WHEN it goes against the grain as to what the manufacturer, in this case Apple, has said concerning those issues. In fact, I bet a hack lock goes against Apple's EULA regarding their software. So tell me, which takes precedence, the rights of the software maker, or the right of the government to say to customers, to do what you want? Let this be a lesson to you regarding trusting what the government says.

So now you've unlocked your phone or loaded your phone with all that neat third party stuff that Apple has no obligation to make sure it's up-date firmware software will be COMPLIANT. Afterall, who do you think Apple is, Microsoft?! Oh Wait!?, or is that what you wish Apple to become? (sorry Hertz car rental, bad pun)

WHAT

please please please keep us informed!!!!!

If you believe this loser with his "anonymous Apple insider patch", YOU have just won the South African lottery AND are the sole beneficiary of a multi-million dollar fortune! Now, just send me $1,000.00 so I can file the paperwork... Then, watch your mailbox!

I am not rumor site addicted. This site is the closest i get when it comes to rumor sites.

Everything else you said was true though, except i did not know that apple was going to go to such lengths to lock people out of phones. It just doesn't make any sense to me. It only benefits AT&T, not Apple. I can and will use my future purchasing power at my own will, and I think it is fair to say that i am feeling slighted by Apple, and that if they want to treat me in a manner that i dont appreciate, then i can refuse to give my money (or worse, any budgeting power that i have at my job) to a company that I don't agree with.

I have not changed networks with my iPhone, and I am not trying to deny apple or anyone else money(except maybe by using my own ring tones). In those regards, why is it a big deal to enhance my own phone in the many ways Apple has neglected to?

So has anyone successfully updated who only used iFuntastic?

Depends what you consider successful. I updated and lost my custom ringtones and iFuntastic abilities.

But my phone works fine in all other manners. Sure I'm bummed, but the hacks will be available soon enough I'm sure. Not a big deal.

holding down the option key to select the 1.0.2 firmware does not work if you have 1.1.1 installed.........crap

this is all getting really out of hand but it is understandable what apple has done
this isn't the purpose of the iphone really, its not what they intended it for so you cant get too upset. they didn't allow you to put those things on it, you had to alter what you bought in order to do so. they are trying to stop the unlocking and this is the only way they can do so. give it time it will get better. i don't agree with what theyre doing but i understand, i just refuse to update because i like my apps

Locked Phone Bricked Anyway

BRICKED INDEED. And I did not unlock my phone. I tried to at one point, but the unlock failed. Nevertheless, my phone has been shitcanned

the only thing that is really bugging me is that they would disable the ability to go back to a past release if you weren't liking the current and wanted to wait for another one in the future. havent come across any pieces that have done that to me until now. that's the main way i think they are actively trying to keep you from putting third party apps on.

Bricked

After installing many 3rd party applications (mainly through AppTapp) I attempted to upgrade my firmware this morning to 1.1.1 via my MacBook. Much to my surprise my phone accepted the restore, but shortly after the "earth" screen appeared followed by the "activate iPhone" screen with a message that read "Incorrect SIM: Insert an unlocked and valid SIM to activate iPhone."

I have never used any service provider except for AT&T and have never unlocked my phone but I still got this error message. I then proceeded to go to my local AT&T Retail store to get a new SIM card. They gave me one of course and i went home to attempt to plug my iPhone up to iTunes hoping this would activate my iPhone back to life. Of course, this didnt happen. I then went to the Apple Retail store and they confirmed to me that my phone had been bricked by Apple. Now I am forced to buy a new iPhone just because I installed some SummerBoard themes and a few ringtones.

Apple: +$600
Me: One apple $100 store credit.

Please list the apps you were using. I had 7 or 8 Summerboard themes and about 8 native apps installed and my iPhone went thru the restore and upgrade with flying colors.

BRICKED Part 2

I had used iFuntastic to change around my wallpapers and icons. AppTapp was used to install Community Sources, Ants, Sketches, MobileChat and Apollo IM, as well as SummerBoard themes and the Customize application. My belief is that my unsuccesful SIM unlock attempt using AnySIM could have led to my iPhone's bricking. My IMEI number had completely been changed from the one engraved on the back of the iPhone through a 3rd party application, at least thats what the "Geniuses" at Apple told me. The non-matching IMEI numbers are what voided the built-in warranty for me, and i just shelved out $350 extra dollars to Apple all because they want to get rid of a few hackers out there. Im not bad, I just wanted wallpapers. HAHA! So Apple, please, just release native apps. You know you want to.

Alright, i have come to terms with the fact that i will have to give up any/all of my wonderful 3rd party especially the Navizon-GPS. Me and the apps we said our goodbyes before i hit the restore buttton. Fingers crossed now...

Okay first restore and update seemed to have worked for me...i have the new itunes icon etc. Only one problem it says no service where i should be seeing AT&T bars. So don't know if/how this is going to help but am re-restoring...Fingers back into crossed position...Phewww major sigh of relief all's fine now, she's alive again.

Apple damn you for making me give up my 3rd party software. I don't understand, i thought Steve Jobs had opened it up for developers etc...it's not like i sim-unlocked my phone. Alright well, i'm gonna move on for now and patiently but eagerly await 3rd party solutions that work with V1.1.1.

FUCK APPLE JOBS IN THE ASSHOLE WITH HIS OWN DAMN IPHONE...
and y am i the only idiot mad at this??????????
I don't get it...

Not having an iPhone... someone tell me, please, when putting the iPhone on it's charger base that is hooked to the computer for syncing, does it also run software updates or firmware updates without authorization from the iPhone owner???

If it does, that sucks!

If it doesn't, how come I read all over the web rumor sites the past couple of days that Apple tried not to let it's iPhone consumer base down, by warning them to not update iPhone to the new firmware if it has been hacked unlocked or if 3rd party apps are installed because it may cause the phone to be inoperable. You think that if one got that type of warning, and they had the option of not downloading, I thought more would of held off with the firmware update based on Apple's advice.

On a side note, people that can't restore their phone because they can revert back to an earlier version of iTunes, what about those out there that don't have the latest iTunes installed on their computer? I know iTunes was updated for the iPhone launch back in June and again just recently for the ringtones downloads, but what if you didn't update for that most recent iTunes ringtones update. Can just anyone bring their iPhone to your place, for example, and use your computer with the older version of iTunes for an iPhone restore? Or is the new firmware release contain a little more to it than that?

I'd help if able but, not having an iPhone, I'vd never updated my iTunes to the June 29 iPhone iTunes version release... I'm pre that version. Sorry guys.

Yes Apple did warn everybody and some listened and some didn't. Some had reasons, like ignorance on their side, others felt something else, something a little more esoteric, like faith in a company that had not been "evil" much from "a priori" experience.

What we are left with is a base separated into 3 camps:

1. Those who bought an iPhone and did not fuck with it
2. Those who did but are sitting on 1.0.2
3. This who did and upgraded to 1.1.1 and now are bricked

As far as I can see members of camps 1 and 2 are chuckling their asses off at camp 3, but camp 2 is just in a state of deferred fucking. They're the gypsies laughing at the jews being carried off, not realizing they're next. How long before Apple stops iTunes upgrades, or some other sonofabitchery? Yes, camp 2 are now 3 days in the past and fading in the rear view mirror. That realization will creep up on them sooner rather than later.

Which leaves camp 1, the conformist bunch, living strictly by the book, or neophytes who have no need for the 3rd party apps. The "you-agreed-to-the-license, so-tough-shit-on-you" bunch (like anyone even reads it, never mind actively agrees to it).

I ask you which of this camp was Apple built on? Which camp kept the company going when it was dead to rights in the early 90s? Which camp proselytized in the comeback years, bought its products over and over?

And my last thought. Did anyone here see Pirates of Silicon Vally? Do you remember ho Jobs basically broke his own company by pitting the Macintosh team and against the original Apple group, resulting in a riot in the company? Jobs is man who knows how to push buttons, set forces in motion, but not necessarily what comes next. He had choices here and he made bad ones (and this sentence could be applied to those souls with bricked phones, but I will not level it at them, becuase I feel like I know what they felt and what they were thinking).

So let's be absolutely crystal clear about this. Apple are PUNISHING their users. They could have wiped you out and flashed this ultra-secure upgrade over the top, but they chose not to. The altered the IMEI so it is easy to identify and impossible to lie about. In doing so they decided they would hurt the people who are the enthusiasts, technologists that just want to enjoy the device to the maximum. And I know there is another group: I don't like that people violate the whole deal with AT&T and buy phones that are never activiated with them, but everyone else who did abide with the agreement and who merely wanted their phone to work overseas or alternate carrier in the US, so what? What's the big deal?

Disappointed does not even come close to what I think of them right now.

Agree on #4, but is inconsequential to the discussion as they are now part of camp 3, less their 3rd party apps. How can they be happy (don't confuse schadenfreude with happiness)?

You CAN blame Apple for doing this. They had a choice to brick or not. The FW is extremely well locked down and that could be done whether they bricked the phones or not.

I realize this might not be acceptable to all, but they could have bricked phones that did not have an AT&T SIM in the phone? What do those folks do now? They have a 2 year contract and no way to get their service. How the fuck does that make any sense?
