iPhone 3G Unlocked Via SIM Card Hack

Four days after it’s launched, the 3G iPhone has been “unlocked”. Well, not exactly, but people have gotten it to work on other networks a special card that makes it think it’s using an official carrier. It’s not a software unlock yet, but it’s a start. This is also the first unlock method for the first iPhone (that didn’t involve opening it up and tinkering with hardware). Video after the break.

The hack was first achieved by a team of guys down in Brazil. He explained:

Our procedure consist in using one SIM adapter to simulate a fake IMSI test card. Instead of the AT&T IMSI like in the universals.

Basically, it works the same way the original SIM card hacks did for the first iPhone. It forges the International Mobile Subscriber Identity, and causes it to think it’s on the networks it’s supposed to be on. No word on availability yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
