iPhone 3G Chips Detailed

Portelligent has taken apart an iPhone 3G to show exactly what is inside that little device. They have compiled a complete listing of all of the chips and components present in the iPhone 3G. They have found that there have been a number of improvements over the previous model, which were mostly to allow for 3G capability and to bring it up to speed with the iPod touch.

"It's incrementalism at play," said David Carey, president of teardown specialist Portelligent. "They learned a bit from their 'Touch' solution and replaced two boards with one."

"Infineon clearly made their mark on this board with four key design wins," said Allan Yogasingam, a TechOnline technology analyst. "And TriQuint really came from left field with their win their modules. I didn't see a single press-release or speculative article hinting at a relationship between the two companies. In today's internet world, that's a tough thing to keep under wraps."

I've been known to miss the obvious before, but I'm not seeing how much RAM is in the new phone. If I remember correctly, the old phone had 128MB. Is that the same for the 3G? I'm assuming it is. Does anybody know for sure?

Nice Pic

I work at one of the companies inside the iPhone and we got one of our chips on there (we were on there before too, same slot). But, we almost got all 4 slots that were available to us this time. Almost!

What about the battery? Does anyone know exactly what mah rating the battery has?

There is some serious computer engineering in that board layout. It doesn't look like they could minimize the board any smaller, now they have to wait for technology to catch up and produce smaller chips.

impressive

thats amazing that they can cram so much into there
