iPhone 3G Battery Life Comparable To Competitors

Apple said that the iPhone 3G had overall slightly worse battery life than the first iPhone due to it's 3G network capabilities, but they may still have understated it. While it is true that it has worse battery life than before simply because it does run on the 3G network for data, it still maintains higher battery life than most 3G-capable phones currently on the market.

According to Apple's tests, the iPhone 3G's battery allows for 5 hours of talk time, which interestingly uses the same 3G technology as the data. They also note that compared to the original iPhone, they both run the same amount of time if both using 2G networks, not surprisingly.

In a study by PC World, the new iPhone 3G's battery life tested better than that of some of it's leading 3G competitors. The Samsung Instinct was the closest, ranking at just 5 minutes below the iPhone 3G, followed by the HTC Touch Dual and the LG EnV (which runs on EVDO).

Still, some have been experiencing mediocre battery life on their new iPhone 3Gs, like myself, but it's probably because of all the time spent playing with the new apps.

No Replacable Batteries

Yet you fail to mention that other 3G smartphones have replacable batteries. The iPhone does not.

I'll tell you what ... if you turn the 3G off when you have the phone in simple stand-by mode and you're not really doing anything, then there won't be ANY problems ... that's what I've found to be true with my 3G Samsung Blackjack.

Unfortunately that's an an awful lot of buttons to hit to turn 3G off & then back on if you're doing it many times a day. Perfect job for an applciation I would think (though that probably wouldn't be allowed -- changing a system setting).

While I don't technically have to do it I keep a spare charging cable in my cube at work. If my juice is low because I'm playing with it too much or forgot to plug it in last night I can top it off while on the job.

Replaceable batteries are dumb. Why would you want to take a battery out and put a new one in? Nothing like lugging around a pocket full of batteries..... Just plug the damn thing in. Who isn't around a computer at some point of their day? or an outlet?

Still would of liked to replace my own battery

Nothing like getting a fresh battery from a store or online instead of waiting days for it to be replaced for a high cost. Read before its not soldered so it could be a qucik replacement at a Genius Bar

ROTFLMAO.

Oh sure, repalceable batteries are dumb but iPhone users rather carry around devices like the Mofi juice pack to extend the life of their batteries. It not only is the same as extra batteries, it also makes your phone bulky and less portable.

But to most iPhone enthusiasts, it is different and better than having an extra battery to be replaced when needed. That logic is lost with me.

battery

if it had a replaceable battery, maybe it would feel like such a solid phone. since you would have to have some sort of removable backing.

I tend to agree and I already have an extra sync cable at my desk for my iPod for the same reason. Obviously if you're jumping on and off the net a lot, then managing your 3G may not be worth it to you. All I can say is that I started doing that with my 3G Blackjack after about 3 months of ownership, and I was then much happier because I wasn't so worried about the battery always being dead. Just my 2 cents...

It's not as hard as you think. I've carried a spare battery for a cell phone before, and its no big deal. Also, the psychology of using your phone becomes a little different. You NEVER have to even think about "running out of gas," so to speak. Knowing that the next, fully charged battery, is always ready to go leaves you the piece of mind to surf away with reckless abandon and never worry about draining your battery. Even though I will be getting the 3G, I will miss the ability to swap batteries.

iphoneck backup battery

Sure the battery on iPhone 3G is not that great, but what can we do? We want small size phones, powerful features and lengthy battery life.

Just get a backup battery. I got mine from iPhoneck brands. Their new 3G backup battery is probably one of the better looking products in the market. Their website is www.iphoneck.com

Have you heard of detached external batteries?

Guys, get one of those and stop complaining:

are u stinkin numb

Get one external battery from this guy

I went to purchase a lenmark external battery pack for 3G iPhone and found the power cable product from www.imaxpower.com were sold at Fry's electronics. The power cable had 550mAh capacity, which is too small for me. I visited their website and found many choice. I purchased one from them. here is my comment.

Pro.

High capacity, 4600mAh, which is 400% of iphone battery life. This is probably the largest battery pack I can find in the market. The price, 36.95$, which is even cheaper than Lenmark's 2200mAh battery pack, they sold for 39.95$ at Fry's but with battery juice 2200mAh. Their video claim this is from Apply's original battery factory. I went to investigate their site and finally found this product is made by real Apple's OEM battery factory. Check this out. The factory is called Atl battery www.atlbattery.com. This factory is only 6 years old, but i heard it is the solo-battery supplier for Apple. Holy cow!

They carried another model Ty250, which is smaller. With much affordable price 21.95$ with 2500mAh battery juice. 19$ cheaper than Lenmark battery.

The quality is good. Battery is huge.

Cons.

I don't like the USB cable. The cable is too simple. It is not retractable. I contacted the site owner. They said the next generation called imp500 will resolve this problem. IMP500 comes with 5000mAh capacity. I cannot wait to get one. They said it will be in 2 weeks.

Pros of extra battery capability

I've recently purchased a 3G iPhone after having a Treo 650 for 4 years. I am constantly traveling for work, and have spent many nights stranded in airports and various cities. I loved having extra batteries, mainly due to never knowing where I'd end up or for how long. I had two charging cradles with compartments for extra batteries - one at home and one in my travel bag, so I always had at least 2 extra batteries that were fully charged. They were small, lightweight, and extremely convenient to carry with me. Then if I got stuck in an airport, I wouldn't have to sit on the floor next to an outlet while my phone charged. I really don't like the idea of having to use an external battery that needs to be plugged in with a cable the entire time I'm using it - that really destroys the portability and convenience of the phone by having to carry around two units that are connected by a cable. In spite of this inconvenience, I will be purchasing at least one external battery anyway, because I have noticed that just with regular work-related use, my iPhone battery barely makes it through a day. I keep a USB cable at my desktop, but seldom am in one place long enough for it to charge for very long until I return to my hotel at night. Bottom line - the extra batteries for my Treo were a fraction of the size and weight of the external batteries for the iPhone, and once they were popped in, there were no cables to deal with or extra items to carry around... Hope this helps, but it probably still boils down to personal preference...
