iPhone 2.0 (5A347) Software Now (Sort Of) Available

In anticipation of the iPhone 2.0 Software launch on Friday, Apple has added the software to its Software Update file. Although not currently available via iTunes, you can now download the iPhone 2.0 update for original iPhones directly from Apple. Once downloaded, the update can be used to update your iPhone by holding the Option (Shift on Windows) key and clicking "Update" in iTunes. Select the .ipsw file, and you're all set.

Additionally, Apple notes in a guide they have posted that updating to the 2.0 software will erase any 1.0 phones:

Normally if you choose to update, the iPhone or iPod touch software is updated but your settings and media are not affected. If your device currently has a software version prior to 2.0 (1.x) and you are updating to software version 2.0 or later, all data on your device will be erased in order to perform install the new software. In this case, iTunes will offer to create a one-time media backup of your device depending on what content is on your device and what content is stored in the iTunes Library you are connected to. You should ensure that you have enough free space on your Mac or PC to accommodate a backup that matches the capacity of your iPhone or iPod touch (4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, or 32 GB) if you proceed with the this backup.

iTunes version 7.7 is required in order to update. We do expect the update to appear by normal means soon, so those who are leery about this kind of thing may be better off waiting.

Mail not working with 2.0

My mail application running 2.0 is opening but not showing anything and immediately closing. Anyone else who has upgraded have this problem. I have restored it to 2.0 and got the same result.

Can anyone tell me where to find the old firmware on my computer so I could possibly downgrade to 1.14. I know its somewhere but I am not sure.

Thanks.

In the process of syncing my iPhone up after applying this update! So far so good, but I haven't tried actually USING it yet.

EDIT: It worked! I tried out few of the apps and they seem to be working fine. I'm syncing all my music now, though.

One thing I've noticed immediately is that my signal strength seems to have went down a bar or two. Which for me is baaad... I barely get any signal as it is. Though my signal bounces around alot...it could be just coincidence. I'll have to see how it goes throughout the day.

Here's what the app syncing looks like... just like any other media.

Updating now. I'll let you know how mine goes ;-)

The old firmware is in /Users/Username/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates

Are you using a .Mac account? You may need to remove it and re add it for it to work.

can you let us know when the update will be available in regular means?

Alright, who is going to be first in saying "I synced my unlocked iPhone and now it doesn't work I know someone out there is!!!

So you had an unlocked phone, updated to 2.0 and then it simply doesn't work? Do you get a bad IMEI number or does it just want your legit AT&T SIM?

Just keep clicking the "Check for updates" button in iTunes. It'll appear eventually. We'll probably update the story when it's available, though.

not working right now

Mu phone is not hacked and now itunes says it cannot connect to the store and my phone only makes emergency calls!

Ahhh

my phone wasn't unlocked and now it's not working.
it says phone is in recovery mode and needs to be restored, but it won't restore!!!!
help!

Woot! Everything works great so far, except the Photo Dialer App, which keeps crashing as it's loading pictures, but I have over 300 contacts and most have pictures, so maybe it's just too much for the app ;-( I'll have to hit up the app's support...
Mail, and everything else works great for me. Still wish I could get a native MMS, since most of my friends aren't going to or don't know how to send from their phone to an email addy, and I wish I could customize the text message sounds to other than the lame pre-installed sounds, and still wish it would sync to-dos, but all-in-all, 2.0 kicks a$$!

I can only say two words that makes me sad... "no A2DP"

download

where is the download on the apple web site?

when will the 2.0 update be available you think??? (regular means)

it is available tomorrow

Supposedly people are having troubles with this version, so it might be worth it to wait until tomorrow.

downloading the update

When I download the 2.0 update from the link above, the zip file decompresses and I get a folder of files. I don't see any .ipsw file after that....

Any help....?

Had the same issue - try the upgrade from a MAC!

Hi,

I had the exact same issue after I tried to upgrade my "clean" iPhone to v 2.0 from my Windows XP iTunes. The upgrade went all the way through to "Verifying Software" and it would just hang there. Killing iTunes and reconecting would then just eternally prompt for a "restore" and it would never actually work... always would hang. Effectively, a DEAD iPhone and would not restore.

So, I went over to my MAC... ran iTunes and plugged the "dead" phone on it and was able to restore the 1.1.4 firmware. Then I tried the 2.0 firmware and that worked too! The trick is after the "Firmware Upgrade" is done (you get a prompt that the phone will be recognized), disconnect from the MAC so that the phone does NOT activate on the MAC. Now, the phone "required activation". I switched the phone to my PC and it immediately recognized it and prompted me to restore my "backup" (all my settings). That worked fine and now I have a 2.0 iPhone - activated and ready!!

I realize you may not have a MAC available to you, but perhaps if you go to an Apple store, they may be able to help you.

Now I have to go buy some games...

E.

it's taking way tooo long

how long is it supposed to take?

Edit:

I'm sooo nervous... this is freaking me out it is verifying!

Edit 2: YES!!!! it worked!!!!!! Completely fine! I will tell you guys about the apps later!!

I'd be careful guys. I had lots of app crashes and such. I've also heard that the firmware may be for the 3G iPhone and not for the original.

This didn't work for me. Any other suggestions and im on a mac

Available in iTunes

iTunes prompted me that v2.0 was available. It downloaded and went through all the messages that it was updating my iPhone. It rebooted the phone and now is in emergency mode and iTunes keeps telling me that it can't complete my iTunes store request... yet I can bring up the iTunes store.

I have Windows XP professional and a Dell. I had the same problem. My phone went as far as verifying software then displayed connect to itunes. Apple had me un-install itunes, quicktime, apple mobile device and apple auto update. They then made me re install. I then went through the restore process and the phone hung again. Apparently I am not the only one. Seems to be an XP problem. Apple made an appointement for me at the local Apple store. The Apple store successfully upgraded my phone with 2,.0 using MacBook. I then returned home and restored my old settings.

Sounds good. Too bad they couldn't get your computer working with it, though.
