ImapIdle Enables Push Email On iPhone

in

A new app has surfaced that brings a sort of Push-email to the iPhone. It''s called iMapIdle, and it sits in the background and listens for IDLE commands sent out by an IMAP email server. When it finds one, it pops up a message letting you know you have a new email. It doesn't get it for you, so you have to do that yourself in the Mail app, but aside from that it's a great substitute for push email.

Unfortunately, not all IMAP servers are set with IDLE protocol enabled, but it does work with Gmail.

On a cautionary note:. The app requests your email address and it's password, so there is a chance that it could be a clever scam, or insecure. We haven't had a chance to test it ourselves. That said, proceed with caution.

If you're brave enough to give it a go, you can download ImapIdle here as donationware.

IMAP Idle Application

I've been using this app for several weeks and it is really coming along nicely. Highly recommended. Now all that is needed is for the developer to figure out how to have the IDLE notification automatically trigger mail.app to get the message for you.

not working?

doesn't seem to work at all for me. No notifications.

It does load and show the options nicely but I never get popups when mail arrives.

Check to make sure that you've set the permissions correctly and that your mail server supports the IDLE command.

No notifications either

Not getting notifications either. Using it with Gmail.

I set it up with gmail tonight, I get popups with seconds of gmail receiving an email (or popups and sound if I set it that way). Agree with the prior author, it would be better if the imapIDLE app could trigger the mail program to retrieve the email, rather than just prompting you and requiring you to do so. I'm also concerned about battery life with the imapIDLE program running in the background. Would love to hear from anyone else about this. If Exchange 2003 can be set with the IDLE protocol, this would be a good way to get corporate email.

doesn't work

this doesn't work for me either against gmail's imap. set the port to 993 and nothin.

how do you contact the developer? no email link at all to reach the coder. kinda sketchy!

I don't know how to contact the developer, I tried. I was unable to make this work against an Exchange 2003 server (using SP2) but was able to get it to work with gmail. Wondered what battery life would be like. So I had it running, charged my phone overnight. Took it off the charger at 8 a.m., and by noon I had lost 20 of the battery life. That was without making ANY phone calls, or browsing the interent, playing any music or video. WAY TOO MUCH BATTERY DRAIN. I uninstalled it.
