id Software considers the iPhone, Carmack disagrees with Jobs on closed development
John Carmack, famed lead programmer of games Doom and Quake, announced at his company's QuakeCon 2007 event that he has people looking into the iPhone as a possible gaming platform. Not only that, but he also disclosed the contents of a small disagreement he had with Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
Carmack said at the conference that he is displeased with how Apple is handling the iPhone as a development platform. He said he wants Apple to allow its new mobile phone platform to have an open development environment. He described arguing with steve jobs about this, and Jobs explained to him that the reason for this was because it was necessary to maintain "security" for the platform. But, interestingly enough, he openly admitted to his audience that he didn't believe Jobs.
Despite his disagreements with the Apple CEO, he says he thinks the iPhone is "neat", and has assigned some of his people to look into developing for it.
