Google Phone To Be Awesome, Sold Unlocked Only

With the cat-and-mouse game between the iPhone Dev Team and Apple to keep the iPhone unlocked seeming increasingly endless, it’s hard to imagine Apple ever giving up and simply offering the devices unlocked at reasonable prices. But that’s exactly what Google is doing with their upcoming Google phone, the first Android device completely designed by Google, giving it the potential to be even more influential on the smartphone industry than the iPhone.

Rumors have been circulating for a little while now that Google was working on an Android smartphone that would carry the Google brand and be made by HTC largely to Google’s specifications. Now, as more details leak out, it seems that the device will also be sold unlocked and completely independent of carriers outside of hardware limitations.

If true, it’s success would make the first widely popular handset to be offered completely unlocked at normal prices. We could only hope that the rest of the smartphone industry takes notice.

Sure, there might be a lot of wishful thinking involved, but we can dream.
