Game Engine For iPhone To Be Open Source

in

It seems that Apple isn't being very cooperative with game designers, as John Carmack has expressed several times. Professionally designed games for the iPhone are pretty unlikely, but what about development on the community level? Could open-source bring a 3D game engine to the iPhone? That is the hope of LivingArcana.com.

LivingArcana.com is a community-based MMOERG that uses "GPS to track where the player's location is and allow them to interact with the environment or other players using their internet enabled mobile device."

Currently they are working to bring an open-source 3D game engine to the iPhone. To do so, they have contracted the help of Brazilian programmer, Gutemberg Ribeiro, creator of the open-source engine "Conceptus". They are working together to port the engine over to Apple's iPhone under a LGPL license to allow for "true 3D game development" for the iPhone.

On offering the engine for free, organizer of LIvingArcana Gregory Ray said, "I am trying to stay true to the LivingArcana.com ideal of having a free community ran online game. The 3D engine is vital to the project but it is also only a very small part of a very large project and once we integrate it into the LivingArcana.com project I have no other plans of using it for other projects. Why would I want hundreds of hours to goto waste?"

Conceptus for the iPhone is scheduled for release some time around early 2008.
