Free AT&T iPhone Wi-Fi On Hold Indefinitely

in

The boys over at CrunchGear have received word that AT&T has decided to put the planned free WiFi for iPhone users on hold. An internal memo sent out to AT&T's employees states that,

"The iPhone Wi-Fi offer that was scheduled to launch today has been canceled. Nothing has been announced by the company to our customers and will not impact existing customers. Additional communication will be provided if the status the project changes."

AT&T had planned to introduce free WiFi for all iPhone customers today until they pulled the plug at the last minute. No explanation has been given for the quick change of heart. It's possible that the service is intended for the current model iPhones after a 3G version has been released.

Over the past few weeks, AT&T has enabled the service, disabled it, included it in the iPhone plan as a feature, just before quickly removing it and announcing that it would come soon.
