Dev Team To Present A Live iPhone 3G Unlock On OS 3.0, Jailbreak Coming

The iPhone Dev Team has announced that they will be doing a live demo of their yellowsn0w iPhone 3G carrier unlock running on the official release of OS 3.0 on Tuesday evening. MuscleNerd will be tweeting a link for the video stream, so follow him or check back here for the link. The Dev Team has also said that a jailbreak for iPhone 3.0 is in the final testing phase and will work with iTunes 8.2

I'm just hoping the 3.0 jailbreak will enable video recording, video editing and voice command. All three features were blocked by Apple for the iPhone 3G to promote interest in the iPhone 3GS.

I'm fairly positive that the iPhone 3G S has special hardware to make the video stuff work. The voice stuff seems like it should work on any phone though.

There seems to be some debate about that. A lot of people say voice control requires the stronger processor and ram in the 3G S. I guess we'll find out.

While I always appreciate hacking for the sake of hacking, does unlocking the 3G iPhone still have practical value? With so many carriers having the iPhone I'm just wondering how large the market is for something like this. With the original iPhone the use was clear with so many other countries unable to get their hands on it. Now it seems much less so.

AHHHHH!

Down with jailbreaking!

practical? buy a ledgit unlocked iphone off ebay or somewhere else it will cost you at LEAST $600-$700.. jailbreak ur current 3g iphone and unlock using yellowsn0w, its free.. saving some cash seems practical to me.

also, here in the US, you buy an iphone and ur stuck with ATT. as far as i know, i havent seen/heard of any other carriers here in the US that offers an iphone..

In any given country, WHICH carrier supports the iPhone is limited. Unlocking frees a person of going with the designated carrier if they don't want to.

Hacking the OS or hardware is only useful to those that need features not provided by the manufacturer. For example Jailbreaking allows one to run third party apps such as Cycorder that Apple has blocked on the iPhone 3G in hope that customers will pay more to get the iPhone 3GS.

Unlocking on the other hand gives a customer the benefit of using third party SIM cards when traveling or to use a different GSM carrier in their country who may have more competitive voice and data plan rates. For example it would of cost me over $600.00 CAD in roaming while in Hong Kong using my Rogers SIM card from Canada but instead I used a Hong Kong 3 HSDPA International Roaming Prepaid SIM card which cost me $98 HK = $14.38 CAD.
