Breaking: Downgrades From v1.1.1 Are Possible [Updated with guide]

in

The clever folks over at the Hackint0sh forums have figured out a way to revert the iPhone's software back from v1.1.1 which came out Thursday. After failing numerous times, Hackint0sh user Kmac1985 figured out the magic method for downgrading. The benefit of this is primarily to fix disabled phones of users who had unlocked them. For the honest folks out there, this also re-enables the use of 3rd party applications. So if the iTunes Store wasn't as sweet as you had hoped, you can now go back in time and enjoy Installer.app all over again.

To downgrade your iPhone to version 1.0.2, follow these instructions. Have the iPhone docked and plugged into your computer with iTunes open:

  1. Hold down the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds. The phone should shut down.
  2. When the phone shuts down, release the Sleep/Wake button but continue holding Home
  3. Wait until iTunes recognizes the iPhone. The screen will appear to be off, but iTunes will eventually recognize the iPhone. When it does, let go.
  4. A message will appear telling you to restore. Click OK
  5. Using your favorite browser, download the v1.0.2 software from this location. You may need to rename to .ipsw if it comes as a .zip
  6. Back in iTunes, hold Option on the Mac or Shift on the PC while clicking Restore. Navigate to the software you downloaded and select it.
  7. The phone will restore, but it will fail. This is normal.
  8. Your iPhone should show a yellow triangle. Run Nullriver's AppTapp. It should bring you back to the Activation step on the phone and show an error in the application. Disregard the error.
  9. Run AppTapp again and it should succeed.
  10. If not using an AT&T SIM, use INdependence to activate your iPhone. That's it!

We have not tried this yet, but there have been at least 50 successful downgrades reported thus far. If you have trouble with these instructions or if we missed something, let us know!

Updated at 8:50 Central: You may also follow the instructions posted by the iPhone Dev Team here.

AT&T service affected?

Seems to be indications in the hack forum that this trick might leave you with no cell service if you're on AT&T but looking to correct the mistake of getting the 1.1.1 update. Any confirmation either way on what happens to phones with active AT&T service?

success downgrading from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2

Thanks so much to all who are helping defeat the wrong attitudes at Apple.
It's like the old Joni Mitchell song - you don't know what you've got till it's gone.
I missed Summerboard and SendSong and LightsOff and so many others, so now I will be making donations to all of the developers I can find!

re: capnken's question- My AT&T service seems to be working as expected. Well, maybe voice mail is hosed... not sure yet.

Works

works great for me, didnt need to use the unlocker... after 2nd run through apptapp itunes opened and i restored my last sync'd backup of my iphone and it works great.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Worked like a charm!

Successfully downgraded from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2! Hallelujah!
Easy breezy. Second AppTap install worked. Didn't need to run INdependence. It activated all on it's own. iTunes immediately recognized it and asked me to restore to the last sync. All my settings are exactly as they were. Even prefs and settings from the 3rd party apps like Summerboard and Navizon that I'd had before the 1.1.1 update were restored!
All AT&T services including Edge and voicemail work perfectly.

Thanks to all the dev community. I donated and urge everyone to do the same. Keep them crankin!

and now we wait for the break on 1.1.1
I love everyone who make all this possible

I took the plunge and can confirm all AT&T services are working correctly; 3rd party apps are back, etc. I got an error at the end of the Apptapp process the first time and didn't get installer.app showing up, but I just re-ran it after restoring in iTunes and all is right with the world again.

Kmac1985 for President!

ringtones

Any word on whether or not this will allow us to add back the free custom ringtones we made prior to the firmware update?

Wow, this was a quick workaround. I hope after the break of 1.1.1 is made and Apple releases 2.2.2 or whatever, and Apple gives a warning that patience is exercised as the Developer team finds a workaround in a matter of days... It would certainly relieve one's stress, reduce their blood pressure and reduce the profanity on some of these message boards, okay?

iphone at&t not working

Okay so I can get into the phone, but no at&t services available, what now??

attention all
this is what downgrading to 1.0.2. can do for you

After downgrading firmware to 1.0.2. you can:
Jailbreak/unshackle your phone
(This means iBrickr, and iFuntastic work perfectly )
add all 3rd party apps (via installer, apptapp installer)
add custom ringtones via the way you used prior to 1.1.1
Basically. . . you can do whatever you wanted to do prior to upgrading

HOWEVER
there is still no way to use any other SIM aside from original AT&T. . . however, the dev team is working on a way to get that back together and from what I can see are very hopeful that this can be done and soon.

hope everyone is happy now that we can go back and wait for them to continue breaking the 1.1.1

You Mother F@%#@ it work!!!

i was able downgrade from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2 my god...it so good to be free again.....

You're not supposed to unzip the files. Rename the .zip to .ipsw and restore from that single file.

If you don't have an AT&T account, you're SOL. Do you have AT&T or is it another carrier?

Help

I am trying to downgrade from the 1.1.1 to the 1.0.2 on step 6 it says " Hold option and click restore" Which I did, and I have downloaded the 1, 1_1 as it told me to. The instructions are to then "Navigate to the down load and "Select"" What am I suppose to select? When I navigate to it there are like 4 options and a folder that takes me into another bunch of stuff. Pleas help if you can...

Please help.
It seems that when I download the file it decompresses it automatically to a folder. Is it any other way to do it or I am doing something wrong? I just clicked on the link and after awhile it asked me if I want to download it and I said yes and made a folder on my desktop where I decided to save it. Pls let me know what I am doing wrong. Thanks a lot.

worked great for windows. Thanks so much. The only downside is having numbers and my camera roll deleated in the restore.

Excellent!!

Thank you for the post. My phone is restored and working great. I had to run installer more than 2 times - in fact - it kept repeating the error over and over until I launched iTunes and strangely it finally succeeded. I recommend this method to anyone who wants to return to having fun with their phone. Third party apps are FAR BETTER than giving Apple more money by using the wifi store.

at&t account

I have an at&t account.

Not working for me

make sure you, hold down both buttons, and after it shuts down you hold only the home button, itunes will recognize it, but there will be nothing on screeen..

i didnt even have to run apptapp installer the second time! worked like a charm!

its so good to have my old phone back

clarification

hey there. jus wandering about this downgrade. if you buy a new iphone with fw 1.1.1 already intstalled does that mean you can downgrade and then unlock the phone to use any sim card? secondly if you had upgraded the fw to 1.1.1 from 1.0.2 but did not try to unlock the phone previously does that mean you can downgrade to 1.0.2 again and unlock the phone to use any sim card? thirdly if you bricked your phone by upgrading then this will downgrade your phone to 1.0.2 and can use all functions apart from caling unless you have original at&t sim card? chrz

You're supposed to select the .zip file. If you use Safari, it will decompress and put the .zip into the trash. Just drag the file out of the trash and select that.

just go and save the file instead of downloading it. you can try to use firefox. in safari try to save it with the control key.
good luck

ok i just reactivated my iphone
it says inncorrect sim
how many people have this problem?

You're going to have to look into turbosim or something like that in order to get activation if you were not on AT&T. If you were on AT&T retry the downgrade.

windows?

how do i get this to work on windows?

Bootstrap failed - AppTapp

been have Incorrect SIM problem; i tried to downgrade from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2... after following all the steps, i got "Bootstrap failed, see Console log!" in AppTapp after selected firmware 1.0.2...HELP

simple....

When you update like i did you flash the baseband of the fone so other sim cards no longer work.

Wot we need is the fantastic people over at anysim to make a new version that can over-write the baseband if u have recievced the update and downgraded. So far this has not been made possible.

Solution is to donate to anysim and wait like im doin. I wish it would come out by the end of the week but im dreaming.

any one tried this update from the dev team??

Method C (Easiest Instructions)

Guaranteed to work with iTunes 7.3.2. Apple didn't think of everything.
Confirmed working with a locked iPhone that had been upgraded to 1.1.1. Downgrade using these instructions was successful. Phone is activated and all apps and 3rd-party software is working.
Install iTunes 7.3.2, which you can download from the links below.
Download the 1.0.2 iPhone restore file if you don't have it already.
Shift + Click Restore (Windows) or Option + Click Restore (Mac), then point to the file below (use .dmg file in download file).
Use AppTap Installer you will be back to normal with EDGE and Wi-Fi support.

phone downgraded, still no ATT service

My phone downgraded perfectly, but I'm still not getting service from AT&T! I've had an account w/ them for 3 yrs +, but tried to use AnySim for travel (it failed). I thought this wouldn't brick my phone, but it did. I'm back into the phone now, and everything's fine except for the ever-persistant "Incorrect SIM" error and no service! HELP! I just want ATT back!

METHOD C
i downloaded itunes 7.3.2, but cannot open it due to the fact that my "itunes library" cannot be read because it was created by a later version of itunes.

do i just delete my itunes library or what?

i want to help you with this iphone downgrade but i can't if i cant open itunes.
get back to me asap

itunes downgrade

in order to run a older version of itunes you need to delete new one and then move you library else where, so itunes doesnt try to read it..
it should be in username/library/itunes

THIS IS FOR METHOD C

my bad i did that stuff,
and now i opened itunes and it says the iphone only works with a later version of itunes, the stupid part is that i had upgraded to 1.1.1 before opening the new (old 7.3.2) itunes

so im thinking this is a re-downgrade. if you open itunes 7.3.2 after activating your iphone at 1.0.2 then i think you will be able to restore your iphone internet and at&t functions after running apptapp installer like it says in Method C

one more problem though, The version of apptapp they recommend downloading is for itunes version 7.4 and later

i wish someone could just do this for me.

it's getting to confusing.

help if you want

P.S. the current situation is that i'm running 1.0.2 on my iphone it is not bricked, but no internet functions work and it says inncorrect sim card.

those damn instructions arent so helpful

AT&T and the FCC

As reported elsewhere, the contract with ATT wireless has a section that they must supply an UNLOCK code IF requested after 90 days of usage AND good credit.

Naturally, they cannot comply with their own contract when it comes to an iPhone!

The same article says, write the FCC!

I did and received a personal phone call from the FCC regarding this.
They asked for some additional information about my complaint.

PLEASE!

Take a moment to fill out the FCC complaint form available on the net!

The FCC is taing this seriously and may be the best shot we have to opening the iPhone.
