AT&T Details 7.2Mbps 3G Network Upgrade

AT&T has announced their plans to boost speeds of their 3G data network in the U.S. The upgrade would theoretically allow for speeds as high as 7.2Mbps, compared to the current 3.6Mbps peak speed of the network. The upgrade will be started some time this year, with work on the infrastructure technology already under way.

They note that they have already added additional support for the 850MHz frequency range, which is lower than most and therefore better at penetrating through walls, as well as the addition of fiber optic connections to “thousands” of access points and 2,100 new cell sites.

They don’t name what devices they expect to be taking advantage of the new faster network, but rumor has it that the next iPhone will be able to take advantage of the new technology.
