AT&T To Allow Trade-Ins For iPhones Purchased After May 27?

Gizmodo claims to have information straight from AT&T that persons who purchased an iPhone after May 27th will be eligible to upgrade to a 3G iPhone and plan at no additional charge. Unfortunately for those of you who got your iPhones before that date, AT&T will be requiring you to sign a new 2-year subscription contract. On the bright side, you will have the option to overwrite your old contract for the new one. [via Gizmodo]

Am I all wet on this or not? I thought that I could go out anytime & buy a new iPhone and put it onto my existing contract & phone number. Like if I dropped the phone in the toilet & needed to replace it. I can just buy a new one without having to re-sign a contract. Is that wrong?

Why would I need to sign another contract for this phone? I know I'm wrong :-(

If you were already in an iPhone (2G) contract, you could buy a new iPhone (2G) and use your old iPhone's phone number and contract without renewing it. I happened to bust my iPhone, but Apple replaced it with a new one without requiring me to renew or sign anything. Afterwards, I went home and synched it with the backed up data of my previous iPhone.

To upgrade your iPhone (2G) or any other phone to an iPhone 3G, you'll need to sign up for a new contract which will overwrite your old one like the article states.

so my iphone wasnt getting great service so i got a new sim card, but when i plugged the phone into itunes i think i renewed my contract?..did that really happen?

Usually, it doesn't renew your contract, but you can always just call AT&T (611 on the phone) and ask. If it's renewed, you can just tell them what happened and they're usually really good at fixing it.
