AT&T Says No To Cheaper iPhone Data Plans

in

AT&T Mobility chief Ralph de la Vega hinted last month that the company was considering offering a limited data plan for the iPhone at a lower price than the current unlimited plan, but it appears it was not to be. AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel told Dow Jones Newswires that they will be sticking to their current data plan for this and future devices, saying “We’ve been very happy with our pricing”.

"Happy" is most likely an understatement, given that data plans for iPhones rake in 1.6 times the the data revenue of other smartphones. And even though it pushes them to stay on top of (or more often, catch up with) current technologies, it still means huge profits for the company.

Still, while they may have attracted a few more new customers had cheaper plans been offered, most heavy data users probably aren't going to miss them, as it would probably have meant settling with just a couple of megabytes of data a month.

Happy...I'm sure they are

I'm not surprised their happy, the carriers are raping iPhone owners. Tethering should have been a fantastic selling point, but with o2 charging £15/mo - or 25USD - there's no reason for anyone to move away from their existing 3g broadband; you get the same offer as having a 3g dongle & you could get a blackberry on a better contract & with push email included (instead of paying £60 for MobileMe).

I think Apple is facing a problem now - all it needs is the next innovative device to appear on a cheaper contract. They really should have done more with the 3GS to secure future customers
