AT&T Denies $55 Tethering Plan Rumors

An iPhone app site posted information from "a source" earlier today stating that AT&T would be offering tethering for an extra $55 a month on top of the standard unlimited data plan. Now AT&T is saying that the rumors are false, though they offered no numbers to replace the ones they debunked.

The information was posted to AT&T's Facebook page:

“There are a lot of reports out there, but wanted you guys to know that rumors of $55 tethering plan on top of an unlimited data plan are false. We’ll have more news to share when the iPhone tethering option is closer to launch.”

55/month is insane, i can't believe that. Personally even 20/month sounds overpriced when you think about it, but hey what do i know...

What really chaps me is that Treo users get it for free. My buddy has one and tethers all day long.

It seems unfair targeting a certain segment of your market like that. I could understand if there were a business plan and a home plan....but just because I bought the high end phone doesn't mean you can just start charging me for every feature.

It's unfortunate that AT&T can't find a way to make a profit while at the same time provide a sustainable HSPA network. Here in Canada Rogers charges $30.00 for 6 GB of data which allows tethering on the iPhone 3G/3GS and they don't block MMS. Our HSPA network here went from 3.6 Mbps to 7.2 Mbps. AT&T on the other hand appears to not be upgrading their network to increase data transmission speed or to handle any congestion in the network that may occur.

Yes that would be a ridiculous amount to charge for tethering but at the same time this is the same company that raised the iPhone data plan and removed text messaging at the same time. Nothing will surprise me.
