AT&T Announces 3.0 Users No Longer Need To Sign In To AT&T Wi-Fi Hotspots

AT&T revealed a minor but pleasant surprise coming with the iPhone OS 3.0 software. They announced that all 20,000+ of their Wi-Fi hotspots in the U.S. will support auto-authentication, letting them skip the authentication process. That means that as of today, instead of having to sign in, your iPhone will automatically switch from 3G to Wi-Fi when you're at an AT&T hotspot. The hotspots are free to use on your iPhone for anyone with an unlimited data plan.

Presumably the 3.0 software adds a new way for them to authenticate that you are on an iPhone as the old method allowed you to use your laptop instead.

I would never be able to use this but it's a great addition that many will be able to.

For me this is huge when I am driving thru McDonalds, Im searching the internet and than BAM please log in. I use to disable wifi to prevent on my way in but now hopefully no worries.

Finally, they have been talking about implementing this for a while now. Now I just have to get to an AT&T hotspot to see if it's true. Hopefully they aren't pulling our legs again.

Works Great @ Starbucks

I didn't realize this was an added feature until I noticed that I didn't have to go through my usual 2 step process to access their wifi. This is a very welcomed feature!
