Apple To Launch 3G iPhone in June?

in

An analyst with Bank of America predicts that the 3G iPhone will begin shipping this June. AT&T has already announced that they would be launching an iPhone capable of 3G speeds in 2008, but has otherwise not specified an exact date for the device's debut.

"Our latest channel checks point to a significant production build of a 3G iPhone beginning in the month of June after a initial small build in May," says Bank of America's Scott Craig. He also estimates that the producton volume will be around 3 million units by May, to be followed by another 8 million in the third quarter of the year, surpassing Gartner's estimates of 10 million.

In an unrelated analysis, Avi Greengart of Current Analysis predicts that the timing of the 3G iPhone's release will coencide with that of iPhone firmware version 2.0, which will add the ability to download and install Apple-sanctioned third party applications, and of which registered iPhone developers are using the beta version of to write their apps with the SDK.

this is probably a really dumb question. But i'm just looking to get an iphone now (i live in canada) and wantd to go get it mid-April. so what exactly is G3? should i wait until june/july for the new version to come out? or is it not THAT big of a deal and can i live without it so i can get this phone ASAP?

3g is a faster wireless network. Basically 3G networks run at speeds close to broadband internet, and 2G networks like EDGE, which the iPhone is currently running on, run at speeds close to a very slow DSL connection. Can you live without a 3G iPhone? Well, I dunno...can you?

well i dont have a data plan with my phone company, and wasn't planning on using edge, only wi-fi when i'm in an accessible area. so i guess it doesn't really matter to me then unless if i plan on increasing my mobile package. thanks for the help.

Also...with 3G - you can be on a phone...while browsing Safari or downloading e-mail messages at the same time...

This would be BIG for me. I can't stand not having access to web while on the phone.

seems obvious

the when they went from 1.0.x to 1.1.x, they introduced the iTunes Store. When they went from 1.1.x to 1.2, they introduced the AppStore. The first digit seems to be the hardware, seems obvious.
