Apple Seeds iPhone OS 3.1 Beta, SDK 3.1 To Developers [Update: MMS Enabled... Kind of]

Today Apple provided iPhone developers with a beta version of iPhone OS 3.1 for all versions of the iPod touch and iPhone, including iPhone 3GS. Additionally, Apple has released an updated version of the iPhone SDK for both Leopard and Snow Leopard. No changes have been reported as of yet, but we expect the big differences will come in the form of bug fixes.

If you find any changes, let us know in the comments!

Update: The MMS option has been enabled on the iPhone 3G and 3GS under 3.1 although sending an attachment results in a failure. This is likely because AT&T hasn't enabled MMS on US iPhones.

GIMME MMS!

NO SH!T!!!

Because AT&T is run by greedy morons.

What buggies?

When I slide over to spotlight the transition is not very smooth. My friends 3GS was the same way so I don't think it's processing power. Maybe I have to many apps, I'm a bit of an addict...

Plus any bug fixes are appreciated... and I'm picky...

They did improve boot-up time. Before you'd get the Apple, then a black screen, then the Slide to unlock screen. Now there's no black screen, just Apple to slide. :]

Also Spotlight doesn't really have that lag, although I've never really seen one on my 3GS. If anything, it happens only the first time you do it on the 3GS. It happens a lot on others though.

Hmmm maybe I need me a 3GS. I like that change to the boot up time though. It drives me nuts having to wait forever while my iPhone boots up.

Hey. Maybe I'm lazy. My last few posts have been about being impatient. I'll stop now.

I'm impatient too, so... it's cool

Alright!

My guess is they're trying to figure out a way to charge for it. The same way they'll come up with some additional charge for tethering.

Hmm... I don't have 3.1, but MMS resulting in a failure has been enabled on my 3GS. It appeared about a week ago. I don't know what I did to make it appear, but I went to email a video and there it was.

On a different note, I will bet you that tethering (without a plan) will be disabled on this new update.

Tethering still works for me! (under 3.1)

mms has nothing to do with the iphone OS, and all to do with the carrier settings being pushed by at&t

I am up in canada, and MMS and tethering was enabled when I plugged my phone into my computer, and itunes popped up and said "itunes would like to update your carrier profile, click continue to proceed" or something along that lines.

3.1 has updated the video editing so you can save as a copy, rather than running over your current version.
also get updated modem firmware (5.08.01) and the phone vibrates when you move apps.
also read that voice control works over bluetooth, haven't tested.

Wow, thanks for that info! I'm really digging all of that, especially the Voice Control over bluetooth.

Re the whole carrier thing, you're very right, but the OS itself can come preloaded with that stuff. The carrier updates are added on top and 3.1 seems to come with it built in. It also seems to have overwritten my tether hack (judging by the version change) although tethering still works under this build.

OS can't come with carrier settings otherwise i wouldn't be able to download the beta from the site and install it otherwise i would be sending MMS through AT&T (if it worked )
the os is just a generic OS without carrier settings - the phones come with a version out of the box, which can be updated through a mobile website, or through itunes

that might help get you AT&T guys in the game

horaah for mms

o2 mms works yay!

I spoke with AT&T and what they are told to tell people is, "MMS will be ready before the end of summer." Judging by his tone of voice, he sounded like he had said it a lot and was just as annoyed that AT&T hadn't activated it yet.

They have already stated that MMS will be free with any SMS plan. All vendors charge extra for tethering so AT&T will not be the only one. I believe Sprint has a data plan that includes tethering but it starts at $85 a month. They ALL charge extra for tethering.

voice control over bluetooth will be cool. i wish you can have total sound control on bluetooth. I have a BT headset but it doesnt work with simplify :-(. i just dont like syncing my music thru itunes so i just use simplify so that i can have all my music all the time instead of having a limited amount

Other than the explanation of running out of time, I cant imagine why VC over BT was not included in 3.0

I am glad that it has been addressed quickly after all.

This is not true all vendors do not charge extra for tethering, tethering is free with some carriers all around the world. http://www.femtocellnews.net/2009/06...s-subscribers/

Actually, the iPhone OS DOES come with carrier bundles. Here's a screenshot of a decrypted OS partition at System/Library/Carrier Bundles:

Ok, so where can we download the 3,1 equivalent AT&T Carrier Settings 4.2 file? ;-)
