Apple Releases iTunes 7.7, Includes App Store [Update:Available for Windows]

Early Thursday morning, Apple released iTunes version 7.7 to Mac users via Software Update. The update includes access to the App Store and can be controlled via the iPhone or iPod touch iTunes Remote app, once available. Additionally, iTunes 7.7 is required for the iPhone 2.0 software as well as the iPhone 3G.

According to the documentation accompanying the update,

Use iTunes 7.7 to sync music, video, and more with iPhone 3G, and download applications from the iTunes Store exclusively designed for iPhone and iPod touch with software version 2.0 or later. Also use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home — a free download from the App Store.

The App Store remains offline for the time being, and navigating to it returns a denial message:

Although it's currently only available to Mac users, the software will likely be released for Windows shortly.

Update: iTunes 7.7 is now available for Windows users as well.

I installed 7.7, and didn't see any obvious link to the App store.

Guess it'll show up with the 2.0 update on Friday.

^^^ Same here. I would post a screen shot also but I am at work. Are we missing something?

Holy crap. The iPhone apps store is there. I clicked on ITunes Store... didn't see anything so I did a search for iPhone.... and clicked on "See all" under applications

any problem with 7.7 and unlocked/jailbroken iphones?

Found it..........

It took me a minute or two to find the store also.
How I got to it was I clicked on the Applications selection (under Music,Movies,TVShows....etc) and then down in the lower right corner, I clicked on Get More Applications.
Looks great !

To See the App Store:

Click iTunes in the Menu Bar.
Click Preferences.
Under the "General Tab," in the "Show" section, click Applications
A category entitled Applications will show under your Library.
When you click on that, in the lower right corner, click on Get More Applications.
heres a direct link to the app store:App Store

oh, and if you cant wait until tomorrow to see use apps on your iPhone, MacRumors found the hidden 2.0 iPhone software!

"In order to install the firmware, you will have to do it manually by pressing the Option key when pressing the "Check for Update" button in iTunes. Then select the .ipsw file manually. If for some reason your download is a ".zip" file, rename it to ".ipsw" before proceeding.

We expect the firmware to be officially released shortly and will appear in your iTunes software update. If you don't wish to wait, you can use this method, but should proceed with caution. That being said, people have successfully used this firmware on the original iPhone, and are successfully downloading and running App Store apps."

Oh, just so you know, according to TUAW, Apple says that it will COMPLETELY ERASE ALL DATA ON IPHONE during the upgrade, but iTunes will make backup the data.

We are all nuts! I found the App Store through the iTunes search and had a quick look at the apps. Very nice!

Dan

App Store Works!!!

I already got a bunch of free apps and purchased super monkey ball! Waiting for 2.0!

The app store is up! there's a pretty display, and I just downloaded the remote app to my computer. i guess it doesnt do much good until iphone 2.0, but still.

2.0 is LIVE

The App Store has also replaced the Games section in iTunes.

I just fired up 7.7 and my 5th Gen iPod Games are listed there!

Gonna check out the iTunes/App Store now too!

THANKS!!!!

I found it now!

Just to note... In order to get the Applications folder to show up on my iTunes, I first had to search for an app I knew existed (AOL), and download it. Then it showed up in my library. From there you can click on "all apps" in the lower right corner, then click on the "app store" tab in the navagation bar.

Here's a "backdoor" link to "all applications."
