Apple Releases iPhone 2.0.2 Software Update [Updated]

Apple has released iPhone 2.0.2 Software Update via the "Check for Update" feature in iTunes. As usual, the update lists no new features, listing "Bug fixes" as the only improvements in this version. Other improvements may be included, so let us know what you find!

iPhone owners with jailbroken iPhones will be locked out once again. Unlocked phones may be locked as well, although we haven't gotten any official word yet. If you require a jailbroken or unlocked iPhone, we recommend holding off until the community has given it a try. As always, remember to back up your iPhone before updating to the new version. This is done automatically each time you sync your iPhone.

Apple has recently seeded its fourth build of the iPhone 2.1 Software to developers, which suggests that 2.0.2 may only address a few minor updates, while 2.1 is expected to address some more significant bugs. It's possible that 2.0.2 may address the 3G reception issue some users have reported.

Update: Using the standard "Update" function, all data, apps, and media is preserved with no need to restore. Jailbroken iPhones can be updated, although the jailbreak itself is undone. We still haven't received word on unlocked phones.

Dont Update If You Have A Jailbroken Phone

It Breaks The Jailbrakes

The Contact delay that frustrated most is no longer present!

Anyone know if the backup process is any faster? I'm trying to install this update now but the backup is taking forever as usual.

Re: Jailbroken and Unlocked Phones

Per TUAW commenters- 2.0.2 "breaks" the jailbreak, but unlocked phones remain unlocked.

Meh

Meh - I wonder what other kill switches this update throws on.

I feel like I'm in a high school relationship with Apple: I love you, I hate you, I love you, I hate you, I love you, I hate you.

Ugh!

Any word on if Pwnage will work with this 2.02 update? ie, whether the phone can be re-jailbroken after the update or create a new Pwnage restore file with 2.02 to update the software that way?

Did update

Nothing noticeable. Same old 3g crappy reception.

What a crock.

any ideas if you can run winpwn to jailbreak the phone after update

At&t

A person answering the phone at AT&T said her manager got an e-mail today that said the update was supposed to address a drop call issue arising out of the transition from a 3g tower to a 2g tower.

Hmmmmmm

I don't know if it's this update, but I did notice that if you are backing up and get a call, then it pauses the backup and continues from where it left off instead of dropping the backup and starting over.

*EVERY* Apple update will undo the jailbreak.

The firmware updates, for the moment, completely replace the contents of the phone's filesystem. Unless Apple were to start releasing jailbroken firmware updates, or someone were to created a hacked bootloader which performs the jailbreak at boot time, then I don't see how it's possible for a firmware update (the way Apple distributes them) to ever NOT undo the jailbreak.
