Apple Reaches 1 Billion App Store Downloads

After a two-week countdown, Apple has announced that the one billionth application has been downloaded from the App Store. To celebrate the milestone, Apple announced a promotional giveaway valued at over $13,000. Anyone who downloaded an application in the last two weeks was automatically entered for a chance to win the prize package which includes a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro.

Apple is expected to announce a winner soon.

It would be pretty sweet if I won. Doubtful, but sweet.

I would trade EVERY app in the lame store for iphone 3.0.

Anticlimactic because all it is is a PR move. Apple just wants to keep the iPhone in the news and major news organizations (CNN, NBC, etc.) will likely report on this. That then will influence some average people to consider an iPhone purchase, which is the whole point.

Nothing wrong with any of that but yes, anticlimactic. A billion, while large, is still just an number that happens to have an extra zero & comma.

I agree, it feels like just a pr move, but ANYWAY... the winner has been announced:
"The one billionth app, Bump created by Bump Technologies, was downloaded by Connor Mulcahey, age 13, of Weston, CT. As the grand prize winner of Apple’s one billion app countdown contest, Connor will receive a $10,000 iTunes gift card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule and a MacBook Pro"
