Apple Announces OS 3.0, MMS, Tethering, OTA Movies & TV and More, Available June 17th

Apple announced that the release of iPhone 3.0 would happen June 17th, just two days before the release of the iPhone 3G S. The new software will add over 100 new features for all iPhones, including copy and paste, push notifications, more landscape mode, MMS, Spotlight search, and more. Apple also seeded developers with the Gold Master build of 3.0 to developers today to allow them to prepare their apps for 3.0.

New features in iPhone OS 3.0:

  • Copy and Paste between most apps
  • landscape mode for notes, mail messages, etc.
  • Push Notifications
  • Spotlight search on the Springboard for everything on the device, including apps.
  • MMS on compatible networks (later this summer on AT&T)
  • "beefed up" parental controls
  • Notes syncing
  • USB tethering for Mac and PC (no word on additional charges from AT&T yet)
  • Find My Phone in MobileMe, which can map it's location, have it display an "if found, please call" message, and remote wipe data if necessary. After being wiped, it can be restored using iTunes.
  • In-app sales of content
  • ability to rent or purchase TV shows, Movies, Music Videos, and Audio Books from the device
  • iTunes U support
  • Faster Safari: 3x faster SunSpider benchmark; support for HTTP streaming audio and video, bitrate saling, web form autofill, and HTML 5
  • Language support for Hebrew, Arabic, Greek, Korean, and Thai; total of 30+ languages, each with vertical and landscape keyboards. It also lets you switch between languages "on the fly", for those who need more than one regularly.

They said iPhone OS 3.0 would be June 17th, not June 19th. Didn't they?????

huh?

June 17th, 19th is the when the S is unleashed.

A2DP? Did I miss it somewhre?

I think in the March 17th event Apple announced this as one of the features for OS 3.0. Also, they discontinued the Apple Bluetooth headset a month or so ago, possibly in preperation of a new, A2DP headset. So, I'm pretty sure it will be in 3.0 and here is the link to the article published on this site following the March 17th event: iPhone 3.0 To Bring Copy & Paste, MMS, Tethering, Spotlight, Landscape Email, Stereo Bluetooth, Notes Sync & More

Read between the lines..

Regarding MMS: Only pic messaging. NO video messaging via MMS for 3G iPhones. ONLY via email.

Regarding tethering: NOT available in the US!

this info is posted on apples website in the very small print. I'm very dissapointed. Despite all the "hard work" on a new OS, apple seems to be working backwards and as far as ATT, thier limitations make and policies (subsidized upgrade eligibility) is really just annoying. Apple should have dumped them as thier carrier before they changed their OS. Despite a few tweaks that are already available through cydia, I'm not impressed at all..

Does anyone know about what time the updates usually release on release day. I only ask because i will be flying from Ohio to Cali on the 17th from like 8:30 am to 1:30 pm EST. I am hoping that the update is released before I board so that I can play with it on the plane. If not I may have to wait until I land around 2 pm EST (11 am PST).

Flash player?

Really hope they have included flash player.

AD2P is a go. I already have the 3.0 (beta 5) software and it works great....well, aside from a few bugs that should be cleared up with the official launch next week.

OTA downloads are now working from the iPhone for my 3.0 (Beta 5) software. Pretty awesome to be able to download tv shows, movies and etc. on the fly. This is huge for someone like me who travels a lot and runs out of movies in the middle of a trip!

Well im running 3.0 beta 5 And I can use tethering in the US currently. Will the update to 3.0 final version kill the ability of using the tethering as I am now? I guess I will not update then.

It seems that the tethering setting carries over with your user data backup. I'm using the GM build and I still have my tethering.

Well I guess they will try to push a CARRIER UPDATE on our phones so It will be just a matter of keeping a backup of the file/hack we have already and always replace it back or never make the carrier update after the 17th.

I doubt they'll even go that far. So few people did the hack with the correct version of iTunes and they killed it with 8.2b2. I think we're good.

A little confused...

So in watching the keynote yesterday and also reading what's in 3.0 I have a question...
What's the difference, if any, between how 3.0 is gonna work on the 3Gs vs. the 3G? It seems like there's some functionality in 3.0 that can only be accessed with the 3Gs. Am I wrong, confused, mistaken?

Just looking for some clarification as to, besides the speed and camera upgrades, what is the benefit of getting a 3Gs if I already own a 3G?

The 3GS is an upgrade to the storage capacity, speed (faster transfer between apps due to processor possibly and it will support the new AT&T 3G HSPA 7.2 Mbps. I dont think the current 3G will support the higher speed, instead will stay at the current), camera, compass (with the magnometer), and the voice control. Also, 3Ss will have a better battery life than the current 3G. The 3GS will also have a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic screen. This screen is different than the current 3G in that it resists the skin oil, in turn preventing prints and smudges. In 3.0, the only difference will be that you can only send video messages from the 3Gs, whenever AT&T begins MMS support. The iPhone 3G will not support sending video because it can not take video. basically that is the only difference. One other minor difference is that the 3GS will be about 0.1 ounce heavier than the current 3G. Lastly, the iPhone 3GS will come with the newer set of Apple Earphones I think.

Basically, if you dont care about video, higher storage, compass (w/ magnometer), battery life, and more important, speed; then you have no need to upgrade.

I think I covered it all, at least what I could remember. If I missed anything let me know or post a reply.

Carrier upgrade needed.

There is no 3G where I live. Still no reason to upgrade.

Thank you utp504 for the response. It upsets me a little bit bc it really seemed when they started talking about the new functionality of 3.0 that it was across the board functionality for existing iPhone 3G owners upgrading the firmware, then they (apple) releases this new phone and all of a sudden these supposed functionalities for current customers become only if you have the new hardware.

When the firmware announcements started there was no mention of new hardware. Rumors, of course, but nowhere was it even illuded to that you would need new hardware to reap all the benefits of the new firmware. I find this to be misleading on both Apple and AT&T's parts and in my opinion it's completely unacceptable for any business to conduct itself in such a misleading way.

Am I alone in this thought line? Anyone?

Well to my understanding, and I'd say I am pretty knowledgable when it comes to electronics, I think the 3G didnt have the hardware. Meaning that all the things the 3GS can do that the 3G can't is because that hardware was not put into the 3G. Also, there has to be at least 1 thing extra, added inside of the iPhone casing, because the 3GS is 0.1 ounce heavier than the 3G.

Woah, I didn't notice the weight difference. Good eye!

Haha Thanks . I have read and reread most of it because I want it and idk, I like the iPhone lol
