Apple Announces iPad, Starts at $499, Available in Late March, Has WiFi+3G

Today Apple announced their highly anticipated tablet, dubbed the iPad. It’ll be available in 60 days and it comes in several size configurations, with the 16GB base-model costing $499. It includes 802.11n wireless networking, a 9.7″ multi-touch screen, speakers, microphone, Bluetooth, accelerometer, and compass. It appears to run a modified version of the iPhone OS, presumably iPhone OS 3.2. It’ll run current iPhone apps without modification, although an SDK has been announced to build native apps. Additionally, Apple will roll out a WiFi+3G model which will include 3G connectivity and GPS. The WiFi+3G model will cost an additional $130, although it’ll be unlocked and service will cost $15 for 250MB of bandwidth per month or $30 for unlimited data. 3G will be provided by AT&T in the states with no contract.

The iPad comes bundled with many of the same applications found on the iPod touch, although they’ve all been completely redesigned for the device. Included apps:

  • Contacts

The iPad also comes with a brand new e-book application, called iBooks. iBooks provides an interface for reading ePub books as well as an eBook bookstore called iBookstore.

Apple also announced that iWork will be available for the iPad in the App Store. This includes Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, which will each be individually priced at $10.

In addition to iPad-specific applications, iPad also runs iPhone applications without modification. Unmodified iPhone apps can be run at iPhone resolution (320×480), although iPad can also perform pixel-doubling to double the size of any unmodified iPhone app.

  • Accelerometer, Compass, Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR, 3G connectivity (3G model costs $130 extra)
  • Speakers, microphone, headphones jack, dock connector
  • 1GHz Apple A4 custom-designed, high-performance, low-power system-on-a-chip
  • Video out with dock connector (1024×768), or 576p/480p video with composite out adapter

Lastly, Apple also announced several accessories for the iPad. The iPad Dock is an iPhone-like dock which you can set your iPad into for charging, syncing, presenting slideshows, etc. The iPad Keyboard Dock is a standard charging dock which features an integrated, full-sized keyboard. The iPad Case is a black, protective case that can be folded into various positions for typing and watching media. Two camera connection kits will also be available which feature an SD card reader or a USB connection to your camera.
