anySIM Released: Free GUI iPhone Unlock

in

This is it, folks. Mere hours after we reported on the update to iUnlock, the iPhone Dev Team has finally released the graphical front-end for it: anySIM. Upload anySIM and support files to your iPhone and run it. You will then be prompted to "Slide to unlock", your iPhone to use any carrier's SIM card, that is. Once you're finished, your iPhone will be freed from AT&T. Seriously guys, it's that easy.

Before you install, you'll want to sync your phone so you have a working backup in case anything goes wrong. You'll also need to set up your iPhone to never go to sleep under "General" in the Settings app. It might also be a good idea to plug your iPhone in.

anySIM is available from Nullriver's AppTapp Installer or from the iPhone Dev Wiki.

Enjoy your new found freedom!

Update: As some of you might have noticed, anySIM has disappeared from AppTapp. According to Conceited Software which maintains the Community Sources,

"NullRiver has decided they did not want anySIM.app to be available in the Community Sources list of packages available in Installer.app. They believe it could draw negative attention Installer.app from Apple/AT&T and hinder third party development. Feel free to voice your opinion at #installer.app on Undernet and let us know what you think.

The easiest way to get around this is to add Conceited's beta repository and download it from there. You can also download the app directly, here

sweet!

I already have AT&T, and see no need to ever change carriers... but for all those suffering on T-MO or those who live in the EU... Sweeeett!

actually, people in the EU have had 3G for about 6 or 7 years now and wouldn't want edge... sooooo

Wooo Hooo T-MO customers... 4500 minutes a month for $29.99 and noww... an iPhone!

not seeing it on apptapp yet

dont even really need to do it but it would be fun to take my friends sim card and watch it work.

Nice, I can't wait to use it.
So are we suppost to just activate the iphone first with say dvd jon's method, jailbreak it with ibrickr, install the anysim and run it? Do we take the att sim out of the phone before running the program?

bboyredcel,
4500 minutes for $29.99??? where?

Yeah, if it's not showing up in Installer.app (was earlier) then you should try using iFuntastic or iBrickr. I don't know how the latter works, but I think it will

Can I get anySIM from Installer.app?

Follow the instructions here on an easy way to set it up.

I would rather have to add a rouge repo then loose my apptapp.

I tried to put this in the phone using ifuntastic, it shows up and the display, and I am able to launch the app, however it hasn't allowed me to use my sim card (which is a slightly older cingular card Jan. 07) it just kind of slows my iphone down, has this happened to anyone else, how long does it take to work?

unlock failed... att not working now???

I've been activated w/ ATT and using my iPhone for 2 months now. I just installed anySIM, it failed, said it couldn't find...something, and I didn't think too much of it but "Oh well." Now my phone isn't finding the ATT network at all! When I go to Settings->About the network says n/a and there's no signal! Taking my SIM card out and putting it back in isn't helping, nor is resetting the phone. Help! I just want ATT back!

Just Restore

Back to BigMamma iTunes, she'll be happy to give a big hug and restore.

Same problem here. Any suggestions as to what to do. I did an uninstall of any sim and reinstalled but same thing. Wont let me tap on ok unlock my phone. What gives???

Thanks

For those having failed unlocks:

Make sure you don't have a SIM lock. If you do, remove it. Try rebooting the iPhone and then run the application again. If it still doesn't work, try a restore and then run.

People need to remember that unlocking an iPhone for use on another carrier is a hobbyist's pursuit, like over-clocking computers, etc. *Not* for people who want a working and fully supported product. After you unlock your iPhone, you may well have no warranty coverage -- depending on whether or not you can get the iPhone back to original state, and even if you can, you'll have no AT&T service on it which will raise questions at the support level. You'll also lose features like YouTube, Visual Voicemail, and potentially some of the other current and future widget applications.

Further, you'll have no carrier support for the iPhone. And in the States, probably to avoid becoming the target of litigation, and especially since Tmobile is apparently regretting their decision to turn Apple down in the States and are working with them for exclusivity in some EU countries, I've anecdotally heard that if Tmobile finds out you're using an iPhone on their network, they'll kill your SIM card. They even have sort of a fair case for this as they have not built out their EDGE network to support the kind of massive data usage iPhone owners are racking up. I'm sure if this is the case, they'll restore your service once you agree to stop using the iPhone, but you'll go through a hassle and pay to get a new SIM card and reactivation of your account.

i have the same problem wut did u do to get it to work again

Waiting for Activation

I had the same problem and tried to do a restore and it still doesn't register with AT&T. No Joy.

Hi Carl

I had the same problem, you need bsd subsystem installed. I installed it using Installer.app

Cheers

To reiterate, you need the BSD Subsystem which you can get from Installer.app

I simply won't work without it

Did you use the pxl from the dev team?

http://www.deadbeef.cn/files/anySIM.pxl

At&t

You americans don't know how good you have it. I hear all this crap about how AT&T is a bad company with awful plans. If Canada ever saw a plan that good we would all retire and talk on the phone all day. For a plan like the one offered for the iPhone through AT&T in Canada would cost about $500/month.

Stop bitching.

iPhone problems

I used anySim and unlocked my phone, but it doesn't work in t-mobile, it shows "no service" and i can't make any phone call, cause all of them fail. What could be the reason?
