AIM Becomes Location Aware, Split Into ‘AIM Free’ And ‘AIM Paid’

AOL is updating their AIM app to version 2.0, adding location-awareness and SMS support for when you log out. Users will gain the ability to view people in a group called “Near Me” showing buddies within a certain distance to chat with only those nearby, and the ability to opt to share your location with others on AIM. You can also now have messages sent to you while the app is closed forwarded to you as SMS’s. The new features come at a price, however. AOL has renamed their free app AIM Free [Free], and switched over to an ad supported model. A paid version, called AIM Paid, is said to be navigating the approval process already. Fortunately, the ads don’t show up while chatting.
