3G iPhone May be Smaller, Lighter Than Current Model

The 3G iPhone is on the tip of everyone's brain until June, so speculation is to be expected. The Taiwan Economic News, citing sources close to the story in the supply chain, claims that the 3G iPhone will be lighter and more compact than the first generation model. While the current iPhone weighs 158 grams, the new model is expected to weigh only 110 to 120 grams with much of the weight reduction stemming from a material swap that will feature a magnesium casing as opposed to an aluminum one.

"In addition to weight advantage, the latest version is also more energy efficient and externally smarter," the Economic News added. "LCD screen on the phone measures 2.8 inches diagonally, a downsize from first generation`s 3.5 inches."

The newspaper also echoed a recent report from the Chinese-language Commercial Times in saying Apple has placed orders for 25 million of the devices over an unspecified time frame. Materials for an initial build of 300,000 units are reportedly due in Foxconn's manufacturing facilities by the end of next month, with a secondary build of 3 million units to take place in June.

The smaller screen has a good and a bad. Its good because it makes the phone smaller, and, well, we all like smaller phones. Also, like stated above, the energy is more efficient. But the bad part is actually using the keyboard. People already have problems typing with the current keyboard because it's too small, so to make it even smaller isn't such a good move.

If the screen was smaller you would have to turn it sideways to type anything. I can't see that happening, it would seem like a mistake

Potential fail

To paraphrase Roy Batty, "I want more battery life...father." The size is fine, make it any smaller and you'll unleash a big wave of whining by everyone who might buy one now. If you must, make two phones.
