Free iPhone Unlock Released [Updated] -    #1

It was bound to happen. According to our pals at Gizmodo, the iPhone Dev Team has officially released "iUnlock". The software will unlock the restriction to AT&T SIM cards, allowing users to use their iPhone on any GSM network. This comes on the heels of iPhoneSIMFree's release of its $99 unlock software.

Details are sketchy at this time, but it seems that the software runs on the iPhone itself. The source code has also been released and mirrored by Gizmodo. A full tutorial is expected soon and we'll continue watching this story as it progresses and update as necessary.

[via Gizmodo]

Update 8:30PM CDT: Engadget has posted some rudimentary instructions on using the unlock software:

  • Make sure you have firmware v1.0.2

  • Drop those three files on your iPhone (and possibly chmod 555 iUnlock)

  • Stop the comm center (launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist)

  • Run ./iUnlock ICE03.14.08_G.fls nor

  • Watch your iPhone get unlocked?? (About 20 minutes, supposedly)

  • Minicom into the tty.baseband
    minicom -s
    setup modem as /dev/tty.baseband
    type:
    AT S7=45 S0=0 L1 V1 X4 &c1 E1 Q0 [enter]
    AT+CLCK="PN",0,"00000000"
    [enter]
    AT+CLCK="PN",2 [enter]
(If you cant write in the minicom, start commcenter again and stop it again)

  • Run /bin/launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist

  • AGAIN: we CANNOT confirm this is the correct method to use iUnlock! Just what we've gleaned from the internets, do not consider this a guide.

Update 8:45PM CDT: Unlock.no has posted written up an in-depth guide on unlocking your iPhone.

Update 12:00AM CDT: I can confirm that this method does totally work. I used the guide from iphone.unlock.no

You can also try this new method (unlock.pxl) which involves jailbreaking your iPhone and then running the file as an application. Several people have indicated that it works.
